Hey guys, well it's really happening and next week I will be selling my computer. I have $1000 for a new rig. What parts do you guys advise?

So far, I've came up with

CPU: C2D E6600

GFX: 8800GTS 640 MB

*Already have cd/drive, monitor, speakers etc.*

Requirements for my stuff: Mobo needs to have 8 channel HD sound and the PSU is preferably modular.

Thanks!

Im in US btw

IMHO what u have is sufficient for a while @ least ... wait until the quads come down in price (a few months -- hell even a phenom) then ur $1k will buy @ least a 150% performance improvement over ur current rig as opposed to the 30-50ish a C2D will bring over ur Pent D ...

u cld get the graphs card now

[bastrad time ] p.s. its obv ur in the US by stating ur budget in $ :D Canadians and Aussies usually display AUS$1k or CAN$1K[/bastrad time]

How about getting a C2D and a mobo that I can put a quaddie in later?

are you looking at doing SLI?

the only reason i bought a 680i board was to have a play with the unlinked mem settings etc.

the intel chipset boards are all faster than the 680i clock for clock

the P35 also has the improved memory controller for higher bandwidth... and compared to the 680i boards, the sata controller is much better

I read an AnandTech review that showed the 680 actually come out on top...do you guys think I should wait for the Quad Core prices to come down? Shouldn't the QX6600 be hitting $266 soon?

If it were me I would wait, buying dual core now is like buying DX9, soon things will need the extra power and you will be into more money.

Does anyone know around when the quads will drop in price?

alleged in a few months (july-aug) ... all ask my bro in law (works r&D @ Intel --- that said he may not know the dates)

He does not know when .. rumor is Q3

Patience seems to be a pretty big virtue in the pc world... but yeah, a QX6600 in the mid-high $200's in Q3 would be very nice to go with what you have and what you want. Could be a great time to pick up cheap RAM and hard drives right now before they go up, though I suspect hard drives are the safer bet to stay low and at the SATA-II spec while RAM may change to a new spec (DDR3?) by the time you get your new mobo and cpu (just a possibility, mind you). I'd shop around between the 8800GTS 320 and 640 MB versions, if I could cut off a $100 or more between the two I'd go 320MB. And if you're really lucky PSU prices will drop some, good ones are so damn expensive now.

I haven't heard of this 'P35', is it a new Intel chipset? Better than the P965/975X? If so I may want one myself. (Just ordered a Razer Death Adder and a GB of G.Skill DDR2-800 to make 4GBs of RAM, supercharge my Vista:D Gotta stop spending and let at least a couple years go by without upgrading:mad: )

PS: I SAY WE ALL BOYCOTT NVIDIA'S SLI, STOP BUYING TWO VIDEOCARDS, UNTIL THEY GET OFF THEIR BUTTS AND MAKE SLI WORK WITH DUAL/TRIPLE/QUADRUPLE MONITORS! BALOGNA, I SAY, PURE BALOGNA!!

My sources tell me 22nd July for Q6600 (no X - it's not extreme, locked multis!)

The price of $266 is per 1000 units so expect a retail markup/VAT

Thanks! It may be like around $300-330 when the first E6600s came out, but it's worth it.

I dunno if I can wait that long =\

Dude, I'd wait:eek: Five bucks says Newegg will have them for about $270-$290 initially, drop to $250-$260 after a month to a month and a half. If that Q6600 overclocks as good as an E6600 that cpu would be the best thing since sliced bread!:worship:

(Pair it with my patented HHSF and you'd have one of the baddest rigs on the planet!)
