I have a new build which consists of:

ASUS P6X58D-E

I7-930

3GB of Corsair Ballistix DDR3 12800

EVGA GTX 465

Windows 7

Running stock, should I ever see the core speed @ 1603.7? At this speed CPU-Z list the core voltage at .944 to .952. Do I have a problem with the board, CPU or no problem at all.

Immediately starting CPU-Z after windows logon the core speed is at 2978.3MHz with the core voltage around 1.25. After about 30 seconds the core speed drops to 1603.7.

Thanks in advance!

Speedstep to be exact, when the CPU is stressed it will run at the stock speed dude

It only runs at the slower speed when not needed / idle

Yep on idle drop the power and clock speeds down to save a few pennies for you.

When required the clock speeds will ramp up accordingly and so too the power required.

Thanks for the responses. I thought I had a defective component.

Now I just need to make sure I don't screw something up with my first OC.
