What Card under £200

Hi all, I'm after a new graphics card, has to be AMD (for freesync).


I only game at 1080p, 60-75fps.


My specs,


3770k @4.5ghz
ddr3 16gb 1866mhz
550w 53A XFX Core Edition
HD7850 2gb MSI


I was thinking a Rx 580 8gb or would it be better to just buy 480 and overclock it?


Or wait it out a little bit longer and get a used/refurb Vega 54?


Or just wait for the new line up?



Any input would be helpful

It might be worth looking up how well your monitor works using Adaptive Sync on Nvidia hardware. Nvidia now supports Adaptive Sync on Pascal and Turing with their latest drivers.

I haven't brought the monitor yet, but the one I am eyeing up is freesync 75hz, as you can tell I'm looking for good gaming on a budget.


I'm currently using a 24" benq led 60hz GL2460, I've been more than happy with it, I want a little bump in fps, ultra settings and freesync, I'm not bothered about going above 1080p for the next couple of years.


I think I can get a few more years out of this system before upgrading the lot.
 
You can find pre-owned RX480 8GB's for under £120 on eBay nowadays, if it's bang for buck you're looking for I can't think of anything with a better ratio atm. If you want new & low power then you can find some GTX 1660's for £200 exactly.

I have just realised that AMD doesn't have their game bundle anymore for their RX 570 and over GPUs... sad times. Really kills AMD's value proposition ATM.

Do you have a combined budget for your monitor and GPU upgrade?

I was thinking that, but has it been used for mining 24/7? that's my issue with buying a used card.
 
NVidia's cards support "FreeSync" in a practical sense nowadays at least over DisplayPort, I don't think there's been anything to indicate notably different AdaptiveSync support between AMD & NVidia's implementations so I don't think you'd need a "GSync Compatible" monitor to ensure the same level of functionality on a FreeSync monitor as with an AMD card. Things are abit different for FreeSync2 though.

I think nowadays for economic reasons most miners would use miner variants of the cards without the display outputs which are usually a fair chunk cheaper than that now pre-owned, personally I'd guess the influx of cheap 2nd hand RX470-80 cards atm could be from people switching to 1660/Ti's as the first new cards in that price range for a while I guess or maybe the now semi cheap sometimes RX590's (though to be fair GPU mining is a workload that has much less thermal cycling than say gaming and the cards are usually ran for peak perf/watt which means undervolts and sometimes reduced clocks with Polaris so is likely to have put less strain on the silicon imo, while mining rigs are often ran open air, though for some of the power circuitry the 24/7 operation would be much less ideal and there's a chance of more exposure to the elements I guess.)

To be honest personally I buy new if I want the warranty, or used if I think a 30 day guarantee is more suitable, you always have a good chunk of time to return it if it seems pretty worn down once you test it, but the warranty is useful for lots of other reasons. Stray fingers in fans and all that.

So in the end I got a Sapphire RX 580 8GB Pulse for £123.11 brand new, for that price I had to!, it should be a big upgrade from my 7850 2gb.



I will be buying a new monitor next week with a bit of luck!

I might even miss my MSI 7850 2GB :( lol it's really done me well over 4-5 years, overclocked to 1200/1450 for 3ish years, but I had to dial it back to 1125/1300 lately tho.


Them 7850/70's proper bang for buck back then, hopefully this will last me a good few years too, can't knock AMD's lower end stuff tbh defo for the price!

So, I'm having some problems with this card....


It keeps throttling, high temps etc, it's hitting 77c then downclocking from 1366 to 1100~


I've undervolted the card from 1150 to 1050, but it's still hitting 72c in games and throttling, I was using Heaven Benchmark to check stability, ran it for a good hour, temps hitting 66-67, a good stable 1366mhz through out but as soon as I fire up a game it hits 70c+ then starts throttling again....... Any ideas?


My case is clean with plenty of air flow, v-sync on, limited fps to 60fps too...


I'm not sure what's going on?

Thanks for that link, I'll check it out, I guess the first thing is then is to uninstall afterburner.



I just don't get hours after hours of testing, low temps, no throttling, as soon as I game... bam! throttling and higher temps.


I'll try upping the power limit and report back.

Well the power limit didn't make a difference, still dropping down to 1100~, I'm really quite stuck.......


I might buy a new cooler for it seen as I got it so cheap.......


any other ideas anyone?
 
Could try updating drivers or using a slightly older one and maybe updating the GPU bios.

Other than that I would say return and replace.
