Thermal Compound

I just used some AS5 last week and it's way better stuff than what I used earlier this year (they were both borrowed). What, do you think is the "best" thermal compund around now?

I use arctic silver 5 / arctic cooling mx / ShinEtsu (silver)

Depends on what I'm putting it on

Not sure which is best tho as only tried a few

I use OCZ Freeze. Mainly because it's cheap (like me) and I don't believe in snakeoil products.

AS5 in fact all AS products are "Not snake oil". By any means and thinking like that shows you very own ignorance. As5 is a proven product over the many years its been selling, AS 2/3 are all so proven products and if you dont believe in any of it and its all "snake oil" why dont you just remove any "Tim" you have sitting between you CPU and HFC and dont come back crying when you Temps go though the roof and you blow your system up.

years of development go into products like these and they do work "if you know what you are doing" ... All so the diamond version of these products all so work as do the liquid metal versions of thermal interface products.

The "Only" problem with AS 5 and Liquid Metal is that not only are they highly thermal conductive they are all so highly conductive to electronics as well. So grate care must be taken when using them.

Mind you if you are a hypocrite and say there snake oil and some ones who just won a "over sized chunk of metal" i presume that bit of chunk of metal is now the best thing in the world because you never paid for it.

I didn't say you don't need any thermal paste. Obviously due to microscopic pits in the CPU tin and the bottom of the heatsink you need something to fill those pits and create a nice seal with a good heat conductor.

However, I just don't believe that all of these fancy pastes make a difference big enough to justify their price.

So yeah. A £15 tube of TIM may give you a 3-4c difference. Wow. That's really going to make a a massive difference.

As for me being a hypocrite? don't think so. And that over sized chunk of metal? well, I really badly want to sell it. However I don't want to appear rude or ungrateful you see. So for right now it's just sitting on the floor in the box whilst I wrestle with my conscience. It was really very nice of Noctua to give me that, hence me showing my appreciation. However given that my CPU seems to choke at 3.4ghz no matter what cooler or what TIM it has on or what motherboard it sits in it would be kind of foolish to hack holes into the side of my case just to use it.

Sorry I seem to have offended you there. Wasn't my intention.

I think im more annoyed with the term "snake oil" because this is rapidly becoming a term that people who dont have a clue what they are talking about are using. (no offence ment btw im not presume you dont know any thing as i know you do.).

£5.99 for a TIM (not £15.00 wich is large version of the paste's) is quite good for a 4 to 5c decrease is value for money consider a WC set sets you back £150+ for some times only a 10 to 15c (more if you know what you are doing) decrease in temps. All so considering a HFC (standard is free with a CPU if None OEM) and again a small decrease of maybe 10 to 15% will set you back up wards of £50 to £100 so that initial investment of £5.99 for a decent TIM is a worth while investment and is certainly not snake oil by any means as they do work were as "snake oil" has "no" effect what so ever.

That Term drives me nuts !!!!!

excuse my initail outburst its not warranted by any means at all.

As for the "best" TIMS well that down to individual preference to be honest i love my liquid Metal versions. Im investigating TIM's my self atm and looking into them as i have a idea i would like to try my self.

Arctic Ceramique

a legacy from my phase days, probably the best paste for extreme cooling, non conductive and generally great all round. Any paste should work well if done right but Ceramique is my choice.

AS5 is getting on a bit now but still pretty decent. For ease of use and great results, MX3 and OCZ Freeze are best. If you want the very best and don't plan on removing your heatsink for awhile or upgrading you CPU, go for the awesome Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra.
