ASUS' ROG Strix series of PSUs are due to release soon

They're gonna charge an arm and a leg for cosmetic appeal, despite the fact that we're living in a PSU shroud era.

Anybody else kinda bothered by brands trying to make everything?

Asus is my favorite motherboard and about my favorite GPU maker. Now they're making peripherals, monitors, laptops, smart phones for crying out loud and now PSU's. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with companies branching out trying to increase their market shares and their profits but I saw this a lot when I was big into car audio back in the early and mid 2000's... Brands that made superb amps started branching out into speakers, then subwoofers then RCA cables then head units.... Eventually instead of making superb amps, they just made "good" everything.

I'm probably overreacting but I guess I'm just worried that with Asus making top notch, bulletproof mobos and GPU's that if they start spreading themselves too thin, the products they were known for will start to degrade.

Asus is starting to slip, which is an awkward thing for a fanboy of 20+ years to say, but it's true. Gigabyte has been doing better than them on the X570 front, in the BIOS even (scary). They're starting to make mistakes much more frequently, and I see them going down the Corsair path, banking on a previously decent reputation, and expanding into too many markets too quickly. Now I wouldn't touch most Corsair products with a 10 foot pole. I only pray I'm not saying the same thing about Asus in 5-7 years.

ASUS has been bad for years IMO, it's not a recent thing. I used their servers 10 years ago and haven't touched them since. They were riddled with BIOS issues that took months to resolve at the time. Also had an issue with an ASUS laptop too (my wife's) where it can only boot from the included NVMe. It cannot boot off any other brand/model without using Clover. I won't use or recommend their servers or laptops any longer.

As much as I don't want to use any of their products I still love their boards. Really wish they'd focus on releasing the mini-DTX x570 board instead of announcing PSU releases though. ;)

Asus and Gigabyte are now taking products made by 3rd parties and putting their brand on it and charging 20% more for a similar unbranded product

I don't mind brands making everything as long as they keep up with expectations. These are Seasonic PSUs. They are basically bombproof.

Esthetics is a big thing. You can have an excellent performing PC in a metal box under the table, but if you want to have it all nice and shiny you pay extra.
Braided cables, G.Skill Royal RAM, Tempered Glass cases, and pretty much every single component has a beautification variant that doesn't add performance (except RGB ) and costs extra. So why not have a nice PSU to match your ROG themed rig? Yes, it will cost more than the Seasonic variant but it is a beautification tax, not an ASUS tax.

It is OK to pay extra for fancy cables, and TG and it is not OK to pay extra for a fancy PSU. I don't see the logic there.

The Asus tax is the tax on top of the "beautification" tax as you call it. Because they will always strive to be the most expensive product in any given market to seem premium when in reality they are not.

I know that, and I think it is justified to a certain point and I don't mind paying a little bit extra for a superior product. The thing is ASUS has become cocky in recent times. Crosshair VIII Formula, Maximus XI (Hero, Code, Formula), 2080 Ti Strix, even their Dual GPUs are all overpriced. Rampage VI (Extreme, Apex), Maximus XI (Gene, Apex), all Crosshair Hero boards have a justified price because they are simply that good.

Many would disagree Asus are that good. Hence the reason the Asus tax is a negative thing.
