Quick News

Heya guys!

With the recent update in the news section, which requires your threads to follow some guidelines and approval by a moderator we have noticed that there are only a few people left who post news items as most users just don't feel like writing a small essay every time they find an interesting or funny news story.

That's why we're now introducing the Quick News thread. So far, this is a bit of an experiment for which you, the OC3D members are responsible. If things don't really work out (i.e people start posting nothing but off-site links) the thread might be closed and/or removed.

-------------

Now, as with the regular news threads, there are a few rules:

- Don't post just one (off-site) link. Your post will be removed.

- Anyone can take your small update and turn it into its own, full news item thread.

- If you found the information on another site/newspaper/social media, be sure to include a source (link).

- If you post big news updates ie
1) A new Intel socket or CPU line-up.
2) AMDs next gen GPUs.
3) Tiny Tom Logan found streaking in London.
These will be written up by the team like their lives depended on it, please dont take offense ;)

- If your post is spotted by OC3D staff and is made into an article, credit will be given to the Forum user who posted about it first. Please note that credit will not be given if OC3D staff discover any news stories or topics before seeing it in quick news.

- Do not go too far off-topic. If this happens, the moderators might select the off-topic posts, starting with the news update post and place them in their own thread. This might be a News thread, but could also be placed in the appropriate forum section (for instance Cases & Power).

-------------

If you find a YouTube video that speaks for itself, like the Phanteks case videos, it is okay to just post that but maybe it's a nice idea to include your personal thoughts or favourite features. However, please limit the amount of reviews that are not affiliated to OC3D. This is a review site after all. :)

Feel free to post some news updates here when you don't feel like typing out an entire thread for a small/funny news item. It's up to you guys if this thread stays so behave a little ;)

Corsair have just just announced a smaller version of Air 540 for µATX and ITX builds. It has the same dual-chamber design and watercooling support and it comes it black and white! :D I think it looks pretty awesome. Who's getting one?

No no, this is for quick news articles.

If you're happy to write a full article like you and others have been doing, then please carry on.

This is more for people for don't have the time to write up an article themselves, but still wish to share stories - ie, just a link to a youtube video and saying 'this is cool'.

We'll see how it goes over the next few days/weeks, and it if starts detracting from full articles then this thread will be closed.

It's more just that we've noticed people have been put off from posting full news articles due to the new conditions, and it's really only yourself, WYP and Dicehunter posting in the news section. We're hoping this will encourage a few more people to share news.

Intel says worst is over for battered PC industry

Intel Corp believes the worst is over for a personal computer industry hammered by the mobile revolution.

The Santa Clara, California chipmaker forecast third-quarter revenue above Wall Street's expectations today, sending its stock 4 per cent higher in extended trade.

"PCs have stabilized," Chief Financial Officer Stacy Smith told Reuters after Intel's report. He said he expects shrinking demand from consumers in China and other developing countries to rebound, just as it recently has in the United States.

From the end of 2010, the year the iPad was launched, to the end of 2013, annual global PC shipments shrank a total of 12 per cent, according to IDC.

Intel now expects the market's recovery to help it grow its full-year revenue about 5 per cent, slightly higher than prior expectations.

Chief Executive Officer Brian Krzanich told analysts on a conference call that improved demand from companies replacing old PCs would last at least through the end of 2014.

Also today, Intel increased its share buyback program by $20 billion. It plans to repurchase about $4 billion of stock in the current quarter, underscoring its confidence in a turnaround and a growing crop of "two in one" devices with detachable keyboards and screens.

"My presumption would be that if they’re confident enough to boost it that they see this (PC market) upside maintaining," Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon said. "God help them if they’re wrong."

Intel said in a statement it expects third-quarter revenue of $14.4 billion, plus or minus $500 million. Analysts had expected $14 billion on average, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue from Intel's PC group rose 6 percent in the quarter while its data centre group, a big contributor to gross margins, had revenue jump 19 per cent.

Intel has made little progress expanding from the PC industry into chips for smartphones and tablets. For the second quarter, Intel said its mobile and communications group's revenue fell 83 per cent to $51 million and had an operating loss of $1.12 billion.

Intel's second-quarter revenue was $13.8 billion, compared with $12.8 billion in the year-ago quarter. In June, Intel revised increased its second-quarter revenue outlook to $13.7 billion, plus or minus $300 million, citing stronger-than-expected demand for PCs used by businesses. Intel posted second-quarter net income of $2.8 billion, or 55 cents a share, compared with $2.0 billion, or 39 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter.

Intel shares closed up 0.70 per cent at $31.71 in regular trade on Nasdaq.

French woman sued for bad review

A French blogger has been sentenced by a French judge to pay a €1500 compensation fine to a restaurant about which she wrote a bad review. This review would show up too high in the Google search results.

The French woman wrote about the restaurant on her blog after having a bad experience and thus created a negative review. Since then, said page of her blog has climbed up in the Google search results and was now the #4 result when you Googled for Restaurant 'Il Giardino'.

The owner of the restaurant stated that since the review, a lot has changed in the restaurant and thus the review is no longer relevant, but still does damage to the business because it shows up so high in Google with a title that states that the blogger would 'recommend everyone to avoid this restaurant'.

As a result, the owner has gone to court, which has sentenced the woman to change the title of her review and pay a fine of a whopping €1500, most likely based on the recent 'Right to be forgotten'. The woman decided to remove the review completely.

Looking back on this, the owner has shot himself in the foot big time. After reading the news article, countless of people have gone and posted negative reviews about the business. Google reviews is currently sat at 175 reviews with an average of 1.3 out of 5 stars. https://plus.google.com/113947815154...ut?gl=nl&hl=nl

Welcome to the internet.

AMD Pirate Islands Radeon R9 300 Series
by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 04/10/2014 08:42 AM | Source | 38 comment(s) ]

The colleagues over at WccfTech posted something about the next generation Radeon graphics cards. They dug up an old (what is claimed to be) roadmap which shows details about three GPUs, the R9 390X, R9 380X and R9 370X. There is no validation regarding the source material and their post is highly speculative. Then again .. rumors always start somewhere and props to them for retrieving that info.

Now in their news item posted they already claim themselves that all information is to be taken with a pinch of salt, which really is the proper way to address this information.

The source leak indicates future Pirate Islands GPU code names and some specs. Specs NEVER are final which makes me frown up-on the posted material, anyway here's what they are claiming:

--

According to these details all GPUs will be based on the TSMC 20nm Node and will be true Pirate Island cores, which is why nomenclature of the dies will be derivative in nature. Another thing mentioned is that all Pirate Island GPUs will have the DirectX 12 Hardware Feature Set. According to these details the R9 370X is slated for announcement/arrival sometime this July-August this year. The R9 370X will feature a ‘Treasure Island XTX’ core and supposedly has 1536 Stream-processors, 96 Texture Units and 48 ROPs on the uncut die. Of course this road-map precedes the report we got of TSMC having a little trouble with 20nm so I am not sure how valid the time frame is anymore.

Now according to the details, we will see the R9 390X before the R9 380X. The R9 390X will feature the ‘Bermuda XTX’ core and feature a staggeringly high number of SPs, ie. 4224. The Texture Unit count is 264 with 96 ROPs. It is slated to show up late 2014 around November or so. Once again keep in mind the TSMC comment above. Finally the R9 380X which will feature the ‘Fiji XTX’ core and the following die configuration: 3072 SPs, 192 Texture Units and 72 ROPs and should appear sometime early 2015. Now interestingly the R9 390X ‘Bermuda XTX’ GPU is slated to have 512 Bits of Memory Bandwidth while as the R9 380X is slated to have 384 Bits with the R9 370X coming last with 256 Bits. Now the road-map even hints at the clock speeds of AMD’s future GPUs but I think it is prudent to mention that all these tech specs at this point in time are about as solid as the wind. However let us continue, with the help of this table:

GPU Codename Core Stream Processors* Texture Units* ROPs* Core Clock* Memory Clock* Memory Bandwidth*
R9 370X Treasure Island Treasure Island XTX 1536 96 48 ~900Mhz ~5Ghz 256Bit
R9 380X Fiji Fiji XTX 3072 192 72 ~900Mhz ~6Ghz 384Bit
R9 390X Bermuda Bermuda XTX 4224 264 96 ~1000Mhz ~7Ghz 512Bit

Possible HTC Smartwatch images have shown up

Earlier today Evleaks(source), a regular when it comes to unofficially announcing things in the smartphone world, has posted an image online of a smartwatch that could potentially be made by HTC.

Judging from the way the (what seems to be the) homescreen is laid out, we can see that this is very similar to that on the HTC One series mobile devices, all based on Android OS.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bs0tPCKIAAAQU9n.png:large

According to Evleaks, this watch will also run on the OS made by Google, Android Wear to be more specific. He also stated that the image is most likely not a pre-production render, but an artist reproduction which means that the render would be based on the actual appearence of the smartwatch.

If you're a person who likes the Sims this is great news. Or bad if you've bought all the dlc as it is now free for life! The Ultimate collection includes all the DLC. Even that ikea one. The catch? You have to download origin. Obviously not everyone is into games like these (I'm not a huge fan myself) I though it was neat enough to share.

Motorola to sell 'tattoos' to unlock your Moto X

Motorola has announced a 'digital tattoo' that lets you unlock your Moto X device without using a code. You just hold the phone against the chip and it unlocks itself.

The tattoo is actually an rfid-chip that works together with an app on the phone. When the chip and phone come in contact, using NFC, the phone will automatically unlock.

There are some drawbacks however, the chip can only be used for 5 days, after that you need a new one. Motorola has stated that they will sell the chips in batches of 10, for $10. Meaning that you can use one package for almost 2 months (5 x 10 = 50 days) and you'll end up paying slighty more than $5 dollars a month for this feature.

The tattoo is not compatible with the Moto G and Moto E devices, as they do not support NFC.

GOOGLE has bought out Twitch for 1 Billion

Quote:

Google has signed a deal to buy game-livestreaming firm Twitch for $1 billion, confirmed sources familiar with the matter.
We don’t know everything about this deal, such as when it will be announced and the exact purchase price. We do know that Twitch investors who participated in past rounds are pleased that they will be getting significant returns that are multiple times the amount they originally invested. The deal underscores the value of live Internet streaming and the rise of competitive gaming as a spectator sport — something that draws millions of viewers, can offer prize pools that surpass pro golf’s marquee events, and provides a multibillion dollar opportunity for advertisers.
Google and Twitch declined comment. Both companies happen to be speaking at our GamesBeat 2014 event in September. This deal was first cited by unnamed sources from Variety said back in May that Google had made an all-cash offer and that the deal could be announced soon.
Google’s YouTube division is reportedly in charge of the acquisition, which would represent a significant transformation of YouTube’s business. Google acquired YouTube in 2006 for $1.65 billion.

Hardly. Twitch has crappy infrastructure and now that they can use google's as well it hopefully means less issues with twitch. I believe they don't want to touch twitch and instead want to learn from it.

Wikipedia blocks US Congress from editing

Wikipedia blocks US Congress from editing

Thursday, July 24th, Wikipedia administrators have decided to block all IP addresses coming from the US Congress from making changes to Wikipedia articles after one or multiple anonymous user(s) persistently kept posting 'disrupting edits'.

The edits were made to articles about politicians and businesses, but also the page about the assassination on former US president John F. Kennedy. A biography article about former US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld was edited to state that he was an "alien lizard who eats Mexican babies".

One staffer stated that they were all being banned for the "actions of two or three". This is not the first time that this happened. IP addresses from the House of Representatives have been banned before, when similar edits were being made. It also happened in the UK; When the BBC discovered that the phrase "all Muslims are terrorists" was added to an article about veils, by users of UK government computers.

The recent edits were discovered when an automated twitter account, @congressedits, which automatically tweets whenever a member of the US government edits a Wikipedia article, brought to light that changes were being made.

A few of the edits:

1- The page about the assassination of John F. Kennedy was alltered to say that Lee Harvey Oswald was "acting on behalf of the regime of Fidel Castro".

2- The article about the moon landing conspiracy theories was edited to say that "they were promoted by the Cuban government".

3- Nataliya Vitrenko's, a Ukrainian politician, page was changed to claim that she was "a Russian puppet".

The edit that brought Wikipedia administrators to finally ban anonymous edits from Congress was made on the entry of media news site Mediaite, stating that the blog was "sexist transphobic" and "they automatically assume that someone is male without any evidence". Mediaite had published an article about rogue edits from congressional computers in the past.

The ban will be lifted after 10 days.

It would appear that the rumors about Gamescom had the general gist correct because the GTX 880 is set for a paper launch in mid-september in an Nvidia hosted event. The information comes from the reliable Videocardz.com and fits in with the overall scheme of things that we have been hearing about. The actual launch and the time when you can get your hands on the GTX 880 is Late September or Early October, approximately the same time frame which we revealed to you one week back.Maxwell-GTX-880-

Nvidia Geforce GTX 880 Paper Launching in Mid September – Actual Launch by Early October

Lets start with the facts first. You would recall that we originally gave you an Oct/Nov timeframe for the GTX 880, something we later narrowed down to Early October. This timeframe has now been confirmed by VCZ’s mole as well. We also told you that the GTX 870 will be landing in Early October as well with the GTX 860 following in Late October. Though VCZ’s mole failed to mention this, it is none the less true. The rest of the things mentioned have already been revealed by us before, so I wont go into much detail there. It would appear that initially the GTX 880 is going to ship with just 4GB of GDDR5 memory with the 8GB configurations shipping later (and costing more ofcourse).

While VCZ speculates at a price of $450-$400, unless Nvidia has suddenly developed a very charitable heart, we would speculate at a price of around $499. Nvidia has followed this tactic since the G92 for flagship cards. Unless ofcourse, there is something drastically different this time. Which, could be the fact that the GTX 880, the apparent flagship, is only a placeholder for the real flagship to come. VC also states that the GTX 880 is set to replace the GTX 770 (this does not mean that the GTX 880 is equivalent in power to the 770 contrary to popular belief) so that leaves the GTX 780 and GTX 780 Ti to be replaced by the GM200. In that case a cheap GTX 880 would make sense. However, since we don’t have any authenticated leaks in the performance department we will leave that till the time comes.

Also I think I read somewhere that the GTX980M is now set for release too in October.

Steamroller based Athlon
Quote:

The new processors are aimed at the FM2+ and AM3+ platforms, the Athlon chip will be the fastest Athlon series processor in AMD’s lineup while the FX-8300 is a 95W chip with a sub-$150 price. Just yesterday, we also revealed that AMD has two other Athlon processors which have been listed are the Athlon X4 840 and Athlon X2 450.The Athlon X4 840 is a quad core processor featuring a 3.4 GHz clock speed, 2 MB L2 cache, 95W TDP while the Athlon X2 450 is a dual core steamroller based processor of which details are not known at the moment.
The AMD Athlon X4 860K processor codenamed as the Athlon X4 860K “AD860KXBI44JAA” will be the flagship part replacing the Athlon X4 760K from last year. The steamroller based Quad Core chip features four threads, 3.7 GHz clock speed, 2 MB L2 cache and a 95W TDP. The boost clock is not known but considering the A10-7850K which is also a 3.7 GHz clocked chip jumps to 4.0 GHz in boost mode, we can see a similar boost clock for the Athlon X4 860K.

At least they changed the title of that article. That had it written in quite a mis-leading way indicating that there was a Steamroller FX-8370 on the way, when it's just an FX-8350 with slightly higher clocks.

Wccftech isn't exactly a reliable source of information though, have a look here for a reason why. They took this pretty seriously, hilarious. :D

1 card coming from Gigabyte is a "G1.Gamer" which will apparently have a cooler on it that can cool up to 650w, of heat safely.

No specs as of yet confirmed from the looks of it or pricing.

I need to make sure I top up of Tea Bags for next month for a long TTL video review :D

Info for Iphone fans

With the latest report stating Apple's long-awaited new iPhones will be unveiled on September 9, the speculation machine has kicked up a gear and everyone is wondering what we'll see when Tim Cook pulls back the curtain.

While nothing is certain, months of rumours have painted a fairly reliable picture of not one, but two bigger, prettier iPhones. So here are the answers to some common questions surrounding what to expect.

Why are people so sure there'll be a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch screen size?

Since Japanese newspaper Famitsu first reported the two screen sizes in March - citing a source at a local display manufacturer - the figures have shown up in virtually every iPhone 6 rumour. The original report said the release could be staggered, with the larger 5.5-inch model being released after its smaller brother. Subsequent reports have echoed this.

It's not like Apple to announce a device without immediate launch plans, but reports of manufacturing issues for the 5.5-inch iPhone could also be a factor in a staggered launch. The larger displays also make sense given their huge popularity in Asian markets and almost standard five-inch to 5.5-inch screens of Android phones. The iPhone 5 screen is only four inches.

So when will I be able to get the iPhone 6?

Assuming Apple takes the same approach as last time, an iPhone announced on September 9 will be available 10 days later, on September 19.

Will it be called the iPhone 6?

It seems likely given the company's recent naming conventions, with major revisions earning a new number (iPhone 4, iPhone 5) and smaller refinements or offshoots getting a letter (iPhone 4S, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S ).

What hardware improvements are we likely to see?

Famitsu's original report said the iPhone 6 screen would be "significantly" higher in resolution than that of the iPhone 5S (which is 1136 x 640). This makes sense if the screen is larger and Apple wants to maintain its trademark "retina display" pixel density. A resolution of 1704 x 960 would be needed to give a 5.5-inch screen roughly the same pixel density of an iPhone 5, so expect that at least.

A better battery is almost a no-brainer. One report from AppleInsider claims new battery technology will allow the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 to achieve a 15 per cent improvement in performance over the iPhone 5S. Anyone wishing for a heavier 2500 mAh battery or a swappable battery, both features of Samsung's Galaxy S5, are likely to be disappointed as various sources point to the new iPhone being slimmer and sleeker than the last.

Expect obligatory improvements to the camera, processor and possibly the speakers as well, and don't be surprised if Apple finally makes the leap to including a near-field communication (NFC) chip on its phone to allow for mobile payments.

What about software?

You've already heard all about iOS 8, which will be launching with the new phones. Expect to hear more about health initiatives, connected-home features and what, if anything, has come of Apple's purchase of headphone brand Beats.

Will the new phone be hardier than previous iPhones?

One of the most persistent rumours has been that iPhone 6 will be covered in near-indestructible sapphire glass. Several online videos purported to show users bending, stabbing, scratching and hitting these displays to prove their worth. However while sapphire will still be used for the camera lens and home button, analysts recently said there had not been enough sapphire glass in the manufacturing supply chain to indicate the phone will be covered in it.

Some are adamant at least one of the iPhone models will use a full sapphire glass screen which, taken with the rumours about one phone releasing after the other, could point to a regular 4.7-inch iPhone followed by a premium, 5.5-inch, indestructible iPhone.

Will we see the iWatch on September 9?

Unlikely. If Apple is indeed having an iPhone event on September 9 (and if the past is any indication) they'll keep it focused on iPhones.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870 “Maxwell” Specifications Analysis – 13 SMM Units With 2nd Generation 1644 CUDA Cores, Performance
Quote:
The specifications of NVIDIA’s upcoming Maxwell based GeForce GTX 870 have been leaked Coolaler and we already covered the basic details of the card in another article which can be seen here. The NVIDIA Maxwell based GeForce GTX 870 graphics card is one of the three SKUs arriving to consumers in the upcoming months (September and October).GeForce GTX 870 / GeForce GTX 880 MakeUp

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870 “Maxwell” Specifications Analysis

Last time, I did the analysis of the leaked GeForce GTX 880 PCB which was in engineering state and found out some intriguing details such as the 256-Bit memory bus, the GM204 chip being larger than GK104 while being based on the current 28nm process node. We didn’t get to see any specifications of the card itself aside from a few details we were able to gather from the pictures. Today, we have a different sort of leak in the form of a screenshot which shows the GPU-z program running parallel to a 3DMark 11 score of an unknown graphics card.
The leaker from the main source has mentioned that the graphics card in question is NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 870 which is the skimmed down variant of the GeForce GTX 880 graphics which will be available to consumers in the upcoming months. The GeForce GTX 870 boasts the second generation Maxwell architecture and will feature the GM204 core architecture which will become the foundation of the flagship GeForce GTX 880 too. The GeForce GTX 860 is also expected to launch in Q4 2014 but it isn’t expected whether the card will feature GM204 core or the GM206 core but let’s forget that for a moment and focus on the details we have in hands.
The GeForce GTX 870 has the Device Id “NVIDIA D17U-20″ and the GPU Id for the graphics core is 13C2. We have our own speculation regarding that but before we get into that, let’s denote the entire specifications listed on the GPU-z panel. The GM204 SKU featured on the GeForce GTx 870 fuses 1664 CUDA Cores on the die along with 32 ROPs and 138 TMUs. From the first generation Maxwell core architecture, we learned that a Maxwell SMM (Streaming Multiprocessor Maxwell) unit has 128 cores compared to 192 on the current generation Kepler SMX units. Along with that, we have a 4 GB GDDR5 memory running across a 256-Bit memory interface clocked at 1753 MHz (7.00 GHz Effective) which pumps out 224.4 GB/s bandwidth. The core clock is maintained at 1051 MHz and 1178 MHz boost clock something which I was expecting if the cards were to be able to take on the GK110 core based graphics cards. Lastly, we have the fill rate numbers which amount to 33.6 GPixels/s Pixel and 145.0 GTexels/s Texture fill rates.
Now as you may remember, the first generation Maxwell core architecture which is featured on the GM107 GPU has 2 times the performance per watt and the CUDA Cores, even though lower amount to more performance that is rated at 135% of the past generation. The key word here is first generation, since NVIDIA just previewed what their Maxwell architecture is capable of and having ample time for optimizing and enhancing the architecture, I expect to see better numbers being rated at 145-150% and we can see more power efficiency on the new cards. The GeForce GTX 750 Ti which is NVIDIA’s entry level Maxwell offering is rated at 64W and comes with splendid performance for its wattage. Considering the updated design, I think there’s no doubt that NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870 will be able to trump the GeForce GTX 780 in performance (although not by a big margin).

The GPU name is also interesting since 13C2 could probably mean 13 SMM units which are featured on the GPU which makes us think about the GeForce GTX 880. With a SMM or two in place, we can see the GeForce GTX 880 include 1792 or 1920 cores which although lower than the GK110 based cards is reasonably higher than what was featured on the GK104 chips and with the performance per core leverage, we can see the GeForce GTX 880 right next to the GeForce GTX 780 Ti in performance numbers. The GM200 is still far away from launch and is expected next year but that just gives a glimpse of what to expect from the daddy core which can easily topple the flagship chips.

The core count and configuration for the GeForce GTX 880 looks around right since looking at the trend in the table provided below, you can note that the skimmed down *70 graphics card has generally one or two SM units disabled. The GK110 is the only chip in the line which has more chips disabled but that is due to the extended lineup due to which we had several cards in this line aka GeForce GTX 780, GeForce GTX Titan, GeForce GTX 780 Ti, GeForce GTX Titan Black (all of which are configured around the same core). In case there will be a higher SM units SKU, then NVIDIA will most definitely launch it as a Ti part as was rumored by a few sources a while back. If there are more disabled SMMs, then NVIDIA will launch them as a different card rather than releasing a 4 SMM disabled part
The 4 GB GDDR5 route seems to be the reference route for NVIDIA this time around moving onwards from a 2 GB GDDR5 VRAM configuration on several Kepler cards. The chips will still be configured around a 256-Bit bus but this just seems to be the route for graphics makers these days considering AMD is going this route with their next performance chip, codenamed Tonga (Radeon R9 285) which is considered faster than the Tahiti but has a 256-Bit memory bus compared to 384-Bit on Tahiti based Radeon R9 280 series.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870 Leaked Performance Numbers:

The performance numbers of the GeForce GTX 870 are interesting considering they are really close to the GeForce GTX 780. The card was tested with a Intel Core i7-4820K CPU and is currently a test sample so final performance updates and drivers are not in place considering the GPU-z couldn’t even recognize the card properly until the database is updated. In the 3DMark 11 Performance and Extreme modes, the GeForce GTX 870 was able to score P11919 points and X4625 marks respectively. A GeForce GTX 780 on the other hand on average scores around X4500 points and P12000 points. With the GeForce GTX 870 still optimized and without any sort of official drivers, I say these numbers are good considering this card will retail at $349 US and get you performance on par or better than a card based on a flagship chip from current generation.

NVIDIA Maxwell GM107 Architecture

The NVIDIA Maxwell GM107 architecture is most clearly built from scratch yet looks like an hybrid of both Kepler and Fermi. The SMM or Streaming Multiprocessor of Maxwell will replace the SMX of Kepler and each of the smm are assembled into four blocks yet are defined as part of a single SMM which means the core architecture has got quite dense with Maxwell. Each of these blocks hold 32 CUDA cores so a single SMM with four of these operation units results in 128 CUDA cores. The SMM has 128 CUDA cores compared to 192 CUDA cores on the SMX.
The GM107 GPC ‘Graphics Processing Cluster’ consists of five of these streaming multiprocessors which are connected to a Raster Engine. Each SMM consists of Polymorph Engine 2.0 which includes the Vertex Fetch, Tessellator, Viewport transform, attribute setup and stream output. Each SMM has 8 texture mapping units which equates to 40 on the whole chip and 16 ROPs while connected to two 64-bit memory controllers.
There’s also a handful of cache on Maxwell which is 2 MB in total compared to 256 KB on Kepler GK107 which reduces GPU queuing. IPCC has been increased on the GPU core and balancing improvement to workload has been done. NVIDIA has improved their H.264 encoding and decoding with NVENC on Maxwell so that would result in better performance in ShadowPlay technology and improved sleep states have been implemented to reduce power input while the GPU is running idle. All of this is packed in a die which measures 148mm2 which means transistor density has been upped by 15% on the same 28nm process design.
