A very odd problem with Laptop Memory upgrade...

Hi, I'd like to post an update on this thread. I ordered a new 8GB SODIMM from "Mr. Memory" - a company I'd not used previously - as they listed one specifically compatible with the exact laptop model. I was about 50/50 confident it'd work, after the issues I'd had. It arrived today, I...

    Antec Kuhler H2O 620 - 14 years later

It's nuts. All these restrictions on the retail versions are daft. If you're using the Enterprise version though, you can pretty much install it on whatever you want. I cannot recall 100%, but I think certain command line switches were needed though. However, it's all legit MS stuff, no...

    Antec Kuhler H2O 620 - 14 years later

Exactly. I try to find valid uses for older kit. So, a backup box - lots of mirrored storage - or a media server, connected to a TV (obsolete in many ways, due to today's smart TVs) or something for others to use. It's nice to be able to take an old, non-functional laptop and make it into...

    Antec Kuhler H2O 620 - 14 years later

I have this "thing" where I find it exceptionally hard to throw away working hardware. As such, my original Q6600 PC is still functional, and a great little box for just regular Office and Internet surfing type activities. Of course, I have far better hardware available to me, but it is indeed...

    Antec Kuhler H2O 620 - 14 years later

Indeed it is. I've been hearing stories for years about AIO - even high-end ones - not having the longest of functional lifetimes. Still, we'll see if this post tempts fate at all. Been using the PC for a few hours today, and all has been well. It's all disconnected and put away again for now.

    Antec Kuhler H2O 620 - 14 years later

Hey all, Over fourteen years ago, back in early 2011, I built a new system based around the 2500k. For cooling, I didn't got the usual air cooler route, rather I got one of the fairly new at the time AIO coolers - namely the Antec Kuhler H2O 620, which only has a small 120mm radiator. This...

A very odd problem with Laptop Memory upgrade...

I know I put a spare NVMe I had into an old Devil's Canyon (4790k) system I was tinkering with. It works just fine, except that the Motherboard doesn't allow booting off of the NVMe. Plus, IIRC, it only gave two lanes to the NVMe, not the 4 required for full speed - support on that generation...

A very odd problem with Laptop Memory upgrade...

Really? That's shocking. I'd never occur to me that an NVMe of the correct Gen wouldn't just work. Luckily, this Asus laptop was second-hand, free because it was broken.

A very odd problem with Laptop Memory upgrade...

It's funny, I have three other laptops of a similar generation - two Intel (a sandy bridge 2nd gen "Pentium" branded one, an Ivy Bridge 3rd gen) and an AMD dual core - all three can swap RAM around without issue. It's just this one Haswell 4th gen - still with DDR3 of course, that has this odd...

A very odd problem with Laptop Memory upgrade...

Yeah. I thought I had enough SODIMM laying around that something would work, surprised nothing did. I think I've only once before had an issue with RAM not working, and that was a pre-built desktop (not mine) and some add-in RAM someone had bought.

Good thought, thanks for the reply, but the BIOS is very bare-bones, no such options unfortunately. I did do a search to see if there's any sort of hidden, advanced BIOS options for this Laptop, but no luck.. My current assumption is that this machine is just really picky when it comes to RAM...

A very odd problem with Laptop Memory upgrade...

Hey all, I have a very odd problem with a laptop memory upgrade... but a little history first... The laptop in question is an old ASUS X555LA laptop, circa 2014. Intel 4th Gen i5, 4GB built-in RAM, spinning hard drive, Windows 8, decent enough for its day, but really rather ancient now...

Is the 3080 launch availability non-existent?

Hey all, Having been using a 1070 since they came out - great card - and considering I built a new 3900X based system in November last year, I've really been looking forward to the 30 series. However, it seems like "availability" has been some sort of joke / bait and switch from what I can...

    Odd Windows 10 Pagefile issue

Hi all, This is an odd one... I have custom page file on my D: Drive, it's always been there since the PC was built and worked just fine. Booting this machine last night, I was greeted with the "Windows has created a temporary pagefile" message and, sure enough, there's now an additional...

Intel 8th Gen MASSIVE price hike?

Hey all, So, I was looking up a parts list for someone spec'ing up a new build and I was SHOCKED by the price increases on Intel's 8th Gen CPU's since I last checked. Earlier this year, I was considering building an 8700k system and this CPU was up for £300 - £320. I noticed the price go up...
