X2 or stick to 'normal'

So here's the deal:

I've got a DFI NF4 SLI-DR

I've got a 6800GT pci-e

Now I only need a cpu.

4400 X2 or 4000+ San Diego?

Price is almost the same.

What's the best when the rig is used for:

-Gaming

-Gaming

-Did I mention gaming?

-Internet and the normal stuff

-Overclocking! (Mach 2 GT)

What do you guys think? What are the pros and cons?

Thanks,

Tim

single core then!!!! Dual cores ahve very little aplication in games but persoanlly id got dual core just for future proofing

Or get a cheap FX55 off the forums a few floating around that will clock to 3200-3300 not bad if you pick it up for £400 ??

I did have a FX55 (claw) which I replaced with a 4000+ san diego. I have ordered a X2 4400+ to replace the san diego. I doubt the upgrade will give me any benefits but I just felt like it.

They would be about the same in gaming and normal day to day stuff. Obviously if you multitask heavy cpu dependent apps then the X2 would be beneficial. One thing though - no idea how these X2's will overclock, I'd imagine worse being dual core and all. The San Diego's on the other hand overclock very well.

Can't open that 2nd link mate.

I can't stand PCMark - it's so BIASED toward precictable calcualtions where longer piplelines or multithreads rule the world - A64's have no chance against that.

Impressive all the same, but that does not mean its faster at gaming or photo editing, but it will blast through encoding video like there's not tomorrow.

FX dual core is the answer - best of both worlds :)

Both links work fine for me.

IMO stick with single core, unless you are doing a lot of something that takes advantage of dual cores then i see very little point in going dual coreas you will close to no benefit, it will make your cooling work harder with the increased heat output, as well as giving you a lower clockspeed from the outset so it might not clock as far.

personally id go 3700 SD or dual corel... if spending dual core money, id get one

X2 heat output is actually lower than a FX55.

I thought 4800 x2 pumped out 110w of heat compared to FX55 105w, the new SD FX55 pumps out 89w (I think??).

Also, heat and power increases with the overclock, be interesting to see how this affects temps in a dual core system. It's one the reasons why I am concerned over the current MOBO's being able to cope with fully phase cooled and overclocked x2 CPU.

Still cant open the 2nd link, tells me something about I don't have access to the page (even though I am logged in)??

I'm not sure about the 4800+ but I think that was the case with the 4400+

I thought the heat output was lower at stock speeds (and it should be with lower clockspeed), but it increased faster when overclocking owing to the larger die size?

So I want the 4400+ X2, but now I have another problem.

I have this 'extreme psu calculator' link, and when I pick the 4400+ @ 3000mhz 1.8volt, what would be a nice overclock it shows 248 watt!!!!!

So I can't use it with my prom??? As it only goes till 200 watt...

Now what do I do?

Isn't 1.8v a bit excessive? Whats the stock vcore of these toledo's? I plan on putting my 4400+ under a prom

1.4volt is stock

1.8 may be a lot, but the maximum under a prom would be 1.61 volt, if you go higher you will go over 200 watt :(

I'm a bit pissed about this... you buy a cooling so expensive, and then it can't handle a new cpu :s

248W sounds pretty heavy...Plus, Hasnt some hardware site taken a 4800+ to 3GHz on air?

Remember that most of the phase units are a few years old... in my manual it states that the unit may not be capable of coping with future processors. Future-proofing doesnt exist, please dont forget that :o

I would wiat till you get it and try it I dont think the prom will fall over I am intending on buying one I think :)
