I just built a new Rig

Intalled 4GB of ram, 2X2GB, it shows in the Bios, but when I installed windows vista Ultimate X86 32Bit, just shows In the System under Control Panel.

this : Mem Ram 2814MB

Why Is that ?

Thanks

it is a wel known issue in vista but now you can install the service pack 1 and vista will finally detect and report your 4Gb correctly.

Are you sure? I thought that 32bit OS just isn't programed to see more than 4Gb of memory. But all memory, as in Graphic memory and sound memory too.

There was something fixed in relation to 32bit Vistas and memory. And I think there is a KB. Something to do with the management-of. U`ll get 3.25g free as opposed to 3g or whatever.

Exact details I don`t know, but I`ve seen a thing or 2 posted places.

your best bet would be to install 64bit windows (which is generally faster imo) and it will detect and use ur 4gb correctly

:)

x64 XP p00ns

I have read this somewhere but have not had conformation. I am using x64 at the mo but Canon does not and will not supply drivers for my scanner in the X64 version. So if this is correct i may switch.

With a 32bit OS, the amount of system memory available is dependent on the amount of video memory installed too.

If you were to take out one of the 9600 cards, it should increase by 500mb

da2ca, the 32bit version of vista has been patched with SP1 to *show* the amount of memory installed in the computer properties, but being a 32bit OS, it still cannot make use of it all.

Opening taskmanager shows the total amount available to the OS

yeah i am sure tox ;) i have 4Gb of ram which was reported as 3Gb in vista ultimate 32bit before i installed SP1, and now after installing SP1, vista reports 4Gb.

however if you use everest or the multimeter gadget you still only see the 3Gb...

i will had a screeny later...

but yes pyr0 is right even if now the system info reports the correct amount of memory, vista 32bit is indeed only using the available 3Gb :(
