I'm tempted to try it but I think i'll wait until there are stable Beta builds so I can use all my apps and stuff with out having to reboot back into Windows 7.

Yeh it would be a good idea to wait, but if you have an old machine lying around it would be good to see how it looks "live". I have my previous PC just lying around and I may install it on there.

Windows XP - Retailed in 2001

Windows Vista - Retailed in 2006

Windows 7 - Retailed in 2009

Windows 8 - To be retailed in 2012

Seems like they're doing a three year cycle.

(Not including NOS's)

OK I installed it, and it's immediately obvious that this thing is aimed squarely at tablets. That said, for the average user, this is going to be a user friendly kind of thing.

There was a quirky "reset your PC" option, which is interesting, I suppose it wipes you HDD leaving just Windows on, which might be handy if you sell on a second hand system, but then usually you'd do a proper format of the entire thing anyway.

The apps on the home screen are all broken (on the netbook anyway), but it does automatically detect webcams, microphones, so it is something you could easily use as a PC for now, bugs permitting.

When you come to the conventional Windows desktop, its basically identical, just the start menu is dumbed down, and should you click the start button, you go back to the start tiles. There is still an advanced Control Panel like the one we know.

When it comes to Explorer, the ribbon bar at the top (similar to Office 2010's) just takes up space, especially on screens with sub 1080p resolutions.

In terms of application compatibility, everything seems to work, so that's a bonus. Might upload a vid to YouTube with my thoughts later

Thanks for that nice little insight

Oh, another thing is that the Windows key is now like the Apple Home key, it brings you to the start screen from desktop, or quits the application you launched from the start screen. The old shortcuts like Win+M and Win+R still all work though. To get the start menu up in the desktop, you hover over the logo, but there are 4 options-Settings, Devices, Share, Search

Yeah it's far from the finished thing, but this gives a fairly clear view of what Microsoft wants Windows 8 to be. The average user might be quite happy though, it certainly simplifies things.

Having trouble installing this to my PC, will try later, but it installed fine on the netbook (which was via Upgrade as opposed to a fresh install on a partition)

You can navigate your back back to a "home screen" which is higher up than the start screen (with tiles). It's by default a very sexy wallpaper, with a clock, so effectively a nice screensaver.

Nice scenic image --> Log on selection screen --> Start screen with tiles --> Desktop/apps launched from start screen

Tried it in VirtualBox, and it bombed out before even getting to setup. ("Failed To Start" - 0xc000255)

Will toy with it again later, see if I can get in.

Or am I being a complete n00b?

Edit: It doesn't like IDE virtual drives/controllers, which it set by default. Is loading now.
