Windows 8 Consumer Preview

i tried the developers preview, didn't like it.

All i can hope is that they still preserve a proper PC experience while catering for the new tablet/touch screen market

I was downloading it but then the download stopped half way and couldnt be bothered to wait again, but then i thought what upgrade is it from windows 7 i think its more of a downgrade for desktop having to go to that start screen and blah, how the hell do you open my computer easily? you just dont seem to gain anything from windows 8. im going to stay with windows 7 for a long time i think.

not worth the effort of putting it on my SSD

haven't got a spare HDD either so it is a no go for me...

imo they have tried to bring the mobile experience to the PC as they failed to bring the PC experience to the mobile (i.e tablets and mobile phones)and now they have just ruined windows and all it stood for

but that is just my opinion of course

Its not for us enthusiasts so i will not be upgrading when it comes out, Microsoft announced a few weeks ago that they will be supporting Windows 7 until 2020 so we are safe for the next 8 years coz I aint pitting no tablet OS on my £1000 gaming Rig for sure

I've been playing around with it for about an hour ago. I actually don't mind it, at all. The tile interface works okay with a mouse...I was expecting it to be awful. Not bad, not bad.

ok I have installed it and used for a few hours and I have to say I don't like it, the metro interface is a complete no no for me, on touch screen devices it may be better but for desktop, I don't like it, its like they creating another Vista or something. The tablet version should be kept separate and no features for a tablet/touch screen device should be present in the desktop version. Other than that, it feels the same as windows 7.

Windows 7 is just fine and I will stick with it for a very, very long time

I agree on the most part...but I mean, some of the apps are really good looking. Especially the music one.

It has a couple of things going for it, but yeah, not overly impressed.

Yeah i do also like the music app and they way IE launches from Metro but thats about it for me, not as impressed as i was with the windows 7 beta when it came out

I don't see many people upgrading from Windows7, for the moment it's just about right, plus it's a lot more PC friendly than 8. With W8 the emphasis is so clearly on Mobile device use/touchscreen friendliness, they should probably have released it as a mobile OS. But in a way it does sort of bring the PC to mobile devices, just in the wrong way as most proper PC users will stick on 7.

Can't you switch that bit off and have it configured as a more "traditional" interface?

I reckon that unless they allow it to be used as a traditional desktop experience as well as their pretty tablet one, the takeup could be quite slow. I can understand them dumming it down so that its easier for the less tech savvy, but they had better be careful that they don't alienate their entire enthusiast base.

I think there is a way to switch it back to the classic desktop at startup, hopefully it will be an official feature though, even then there isn't that much more I want from Windows 7 unless 8 brings a lot of performance increases, might be good for my old netbook

I think Windows 8 is a fantastic move from MS. What we will get is a full operating system with the option to be a desktop or for mobile tablet use. Don't forget it is also being developed for the ARM arch so this will be fully mobile ready and fully featured commercial operating system.

Hopefully this will get rid of useless tablets such as the iPad and allow for a less contrained mobile enviroment.

It is possible for it to be set back to Classic menus as well.

There is no way to get the start button back in the CP you could change the registry in the developers preview but not anymore so you cant get "classic look" back again EVER NEVER AGAIN WHY OH WHY MICROSOFT
