Windows 7 64bit OEM on another MOBO

hi, I am replacing my motherboard so I was wondering if I could use the same copy of windows

"Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit"

I heard that an OEM version is tied to a MOBO, is that true? will i need to another copy of windows?

Thanks

You can activate it online 3 times, but only in one system.Try to install it,and if it doesnt work, there is an dial up option to microsoft to activate it online.

Hi,

I did swap my motherboard (different manufacturer) and my copy of Windows 7 Ulitmate 64bit just needed to be reactivated.

I do however get my copy of W7 via my MSDN licence, this let's me install the same copy of Windows 7 using the same key to several computers.

I just did some checking, looks like you will be ok, but you'll likely need to activate manually by speaking to someone & explaining what's happened. Here's the answer I found in full:

OEM versions of Windows 7 are identical to Full License Retail versions except for the following:

- OEM versions do not offer any free Microsoft direct support from Microsoft support personnel

- OEM licenses are tied to the very first computer you install and activate it on

- OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard

- OEM versions cannot be used to directly upgrade from an older Windows operating system

Some persons have managed to reactivate their OEM license on a new motherboard by calling Microsoft by telephone:

Activate Windows 7 manually:

1. Click Start, and in the Search box type : slui.exe 4

2. Press ENTER on your Keyboard

3. Select your Country.

4. Select the Phone Activation option, and hold on for a real person.

Hope this helps,

Scoob.

if activation fails you can also use the automated activation you'll have to read off a long string of numbers to the machine it will ask a question. "How many computers are activated with this copy of Windows?" ANSWER is ONE it will activate and give you a new long string of numbers to type in the boxes. click thru for activation successful message. and whallah ur done

Hope this helps,

I have done this many times and it re activates everytime. without fail. Please make sure this is the only computer that you are using it on. Also it may just activate on its own without having to do this. (The phone part ) It has for me on several occasions as well. its pretty straight forward

Thanks for padding that out a bit S_I_N, I've never had to do it myself thankfully.

Ah, you have been busy! Guess the re-activation process is well and truely burned into your memory then! With my MSDN version I just click "Activate Online" and it just works

I can't be dealing with real people after all lol.

Cheers,

Nice to know. Gonna try and install my oem version on my new mobo. Also got a few msdn licenses i can try on a new system :-)

Just use an activator, as long as you've paid for the copy, MS have their money and there is no logical reason for them to have issue with you not activating the copy.

When you buy a banana from the green grocers, not reporting back to him when you have eaten the banana does not reduce the amount of money he makes

you dont' need any of the things the others have been saying.... you have an OEM copy

if it installed on any HDD, just put that in any machine and let it reconfigure itself and do the necessary updates. job done

but sometimes this leads to windows wanting re-activation. And can sometimes lead to driver issues. I always recommend a fresh install of windows to avoid issues. Nothing like changing a component and using this method and having an issue and having that nagging feeling in the back of ur head wondering if the lack of a fresh install did it. Been there done that to many times to want to risk it again lol
