Will this be safe?

The last card I used MSI Afterburner to overclock with ended up fryed - but now I've got a pair 5870s I want to get to 1Ghz and Afterburner seems like the only viable tool. If I download it again to the same hard drive (I deleted it in safe mode before I ditched the 6950) will it start on a clean slate in my current 5870 profile or will it start in the old 6950 profile or otherwise confuse itself and potentially fry my 5870s aswell? [No visible Afterburner files left on the disk]

I know there's the AMD GPU tool but that offers no voltage control

If you download and install with the 5870 installed, cant se any problem there.I have even swithed from hd5970 to gtx470 with the same afterburner installed and it recogniced the switch, and used gtx470 settings. But that was with afterburner 2.1.0.

yes it will be fine, you didnt need to un-install it in safe mode either. When you install it again,if there are any files left that you missed(any type of config file) it will ask you anyway if you want to use those stored profiles or not,so all you would have to do is say no.

Thank you both
