Why you should, and shouldn't, be excited about Alder Lake

the intels slides show AMD CPU with the performance penalty in windows 11 that is now fixed.
typical shady intel tactics. i am not surprised.

but i hope intel is competitive.
it will force AMD to lower prices... and that´s good for me.

Not really shady. I'm sure these tests were done before AMD had the issues fix. It's only been 7 days since it's been fixed and we've been getting Intel alder lake slides for quite some time now.

Now are they accurate based off time of release? No. But they never are anyway as it's all fluff for marketing. Regardless of company. So I don't think it was intentionally more deceiving than usual

I'm not an Intel shill but I do give them the benefit of the doubt here. I still prefer AMD, quite much too.

I'm sorry, but every youtuber reveal I've seen looks like an advert for Alder Lake. It makes me even more sceptical.

I want intel to succeed because competition, but I somehow feel dirty after watching them. Like they were paid for, which they probably are, either in cash or gratuities.

well intel did know it was misleading.
the issue with AMD cpus and Win11 was known.

i follow these intel tactics since the 90s... it is all well documented.
intel gets no benefit of the doubt.. not from me. :)

intel is as anti consumer as it gets.

and i said that as intel user too.

i was using intel in the mid 90s, then AMD, then i switched to sandy bridge (intel core cpus) for years because bulldozer and co. sucked and then to ryzen in 2017.

but it was always crystal clear to me that intels marketing tactics are shady as f**k.

they sure took this as great opportunity.... less work to "tweak" benchmarks to their liking.

It's a step in the right direction, but regardless of any viewpoints AMD are ahead in my view Intel still need to do better, the prices are not great on either side and regardless of what each camp brings out they arent going to get cheaper, but i guess it could be worse.

Either way I expect AMD V Cache to easily compete with these offerings.

Both Intel and AMD have plenty of dirt when you start digging around - Intel has been dominant for longer so it might seem more disingenuous of the two. Marketing slides ALWAYS show the best case scenario and leave caveats out. None of the manufacturers have revealed that their upcoming product line doubles as space heaters (Many generations of Intels now, late bulldozer, nvidia thermi, 290X...) or that while impressive in Cinebench, memory controller leaves real life performance lacking (Zen 1).

No large corporation deserves benefit of the doubt.

One of them made it clear - DO NOT BUY UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE REVIEWS.

Now he shouldn't have to say that, because we used to be a world of some common sense. Sadly in the past 10 years people keep throwing money hand over fist at things they have no idea of the metrics of.

Remember the wise man's words (if you were even taught them, not sure of your age) Act in haste repent at leisure.

You can always be sure of one thing - it won't meet what Intel have said it will. The game benchmarks were all totally cherry picked. Once again going back to games hardly any one plays that need CPU speed for compute times and calculations.

And besides, AMD will respond, and you can absolutely guarantee it will be better, as they are still very far ahead. Well, at least until Alder Lake releases. They won't take it lying down ;)

I'm a longtime PC geek, and I'm seeing nothing worth getting excited about. That's what pretty much dried up the hobby for me, it's all just so "meh". Heck I barely use the PC power I have *now*, let alone have any need for more. I'm done with this hobby entirely for now, no PC toys this Xmas. #scrooge

Im almost the same. I found more enjoyment from watercooling than using the actual machine.

That said, Star Citizen has me a little occupied lately.

I haven't used my PC more than 15 minutes in one sitting for months now. I probably turn it on once every 2-3 weeks. I pretty much just update all my games then turn it off. Just so the one time I actually care to play I don't have to wait for massive updates...

I tried to get into Far Cry 6, and while it's pretty much the nicest game in the series, it gets old quick. Heck the last game I played on my gaming PC was a solo skirmish in Total Annihilation, a friggin' DOS game practically, just because blowing up robots is somehow therapeutic.

Total Annihilation Kingdoms was my first PC game way back when. I wish I still had an old computer that could run it. That was my childhood outside of school. I too would consider it therapeutic :)

Well to be frank here, the fact that this will be quite bag of money to throw at Intel, feels a bit too much really... I mean, a new CPU, motherboard and potentially new RAM if going for DDR5 that is.

Plus you need Windows 11 if you want to fully utilize the new CPUs, which I doubt everyone has done.

I haven't, I'm happy with Windows 10 and most games and software fully support it, compared to the newly released 11.

I am with most of you all, this hobby has dried up for me personally. I find more happiness with my family, career and I mostly just stream movies, shows and Youtube on my PC lately.

I've been saying this for the 14 years I've been coming here. Avoid new ram technology like the clap.

The Steam version of OG TA runs fine on my 5950x / 6900XT in 3840x1200. :D When they put it on Steam, they must have modernized some of the DirectX stuff in the background. With the old one, it was a pain to make work on new PCs, but the Steam version "just works", allows you to ALT-TAB out (once the game is paused), works fine in widescreen res, etc.

Hm interesting I should look into then. I know GOG has it too with the Iron Plague expansion. I'm sure GOG updated it as well.
