Which GeForce 7800?

My original plan was to get a GeForce 7600, but those don't come out until March. So I started looking at the 7800GT's... and all the ones listed on Newegg have different core/RAM clocks! I guess not all 7800GT's are created equal!? The only review I could find with mulitple cards was this one:

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20051027/index.html

According to the manufacturer's sites, these 2 cards have similar clocks, and according to the review, perform about the same.

I also saw on Anandtech that the 7800GS should be released soon.

I want to get a good GeForce card but keep the price as low as possible; I was hoping to spend just over $200 but I know a GT will run me over $300. Besides waiting for the 7800GS, my choices are between the following cards:

7800GT's: (default clocks are 400MHz core/1000MHz mem)

Albatron, 450MHz/??MHz, $320

MSI, 400MHz/1000MHz, $325

PNY, 400MHz/1000MHz, $320

eVGA, 460MHz/110MHz, $320

I'm unsure about the relative perfomance of these cards, and the quality of the brands, especially eVGA (at the moment their site is down). I'd rather buy a good quality 7800GS or 6800GT than a low-end 7800GT that will give me problems. Please advise!

Ur safest move as per manufacturer is going to be BFG. They have the fastest, most reliable cards in the industry. They're usually a few dollars more than the competition but well worth it.

Check out the BFG 7800GT OC, it should suit u well.

yes i 2nd xfx for a 7800gt :D

ime not sure if its available over there but look into the xfx 7800gt led edition

it has good stock clock and looks 1337,also you can get a free retail copy of cod 2 with purchase

cheers.

I dunno bout XFX... I've heard some mad horror stories about their cards randomly dieing. But they do carry a helluva warranty.

The BFG is over $350 which is out of my price range  ...

I found the XFX at PCHotline via Pricegrabber for $340 shipped; no mention of CoD2, but I'm not too concerned about that. I'll consider the XFX but that's the highest I'd go; at or below $300 would be preferrable. I have until the 30th to make my decision, since that's when the rebates go off at the other stores. <hopes 7800GS comes out by then>

why are you hoping for the gs?

from what ive seen of the 6800gs its not that good

sure its got some faster clock speeds but have you noticed that it now has less pipes?

the speed is nothing without the pipes to go with it i would think.

someone correct me if i am wrong...

cheers.

Not the 6800GS, the 7800GS. The 6800GS is on my list of alternative options, and is already available for around $210. I'd rather get a 7000 series card though. See the following Anandtech articles regarding the 7800GS and 7600/7200:

BFG's a bit much...

(kept getting logged out and had to retype this TWICE  )

Neg.

Cheapest BFG 7800 GT OC (not stock 3DFuzion version) = $356 = :(

XFX 7800GT = $341 =

eVGA 7800GT 256-P2-N515-AX = $300 = :yumyum:

XFX 6800GS = $220 =

The eVGA does have a lifetime warranty (http://www.evga.com/support/lifetime/default.asp). I doubt I could talk myself into the XFX 7800; considering the other components I’ve upgraded already, my original goal of keeping this a “budget” rig, and my monthly income (after college expenses ;) ), even the $40 difference is significant. My choice with the current options is therefore: a high-end card from an unknown brand (eVGA), or a lower card from a known good brand (6800GS). I’ll ask around about eVGA’s reliability/compatibility and keep thinking about it…

um evga is not unknown but they do suck, BFG is better then all of them

Only get the eVGA's if you're not thinking of doing any sort of overclocking whatsoever... I haev a pair of them in my comp and they fuckin blow nuts. They're great stock performers with a bit of clockability but nothing like BFG/Leadtek.

I can only get my eVGA's to 400/1100 stable where as my old AGP Leadtek 6800GT I was able to get to 460/1200 on air! I've got these eVGA's on the best watercooling loop money can buy and they still don't clock for shit.

Just some food for thought.

eVGA or not eVGA that is the question

Interesting... as I was just reading this thread over at DFI:

http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26752&page=1&pp=15&highlight=eVGA

and a number of them think the opposite. I guess it's just the luck of the draw, whether you get a good card or a lousy one. And the model I'm looking comes factory overclocked to 445/1070MHz...

Edit: Some ppl at Extreme Overclocking like eVGA too:

http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=193899

and PC Mag reviewed the card, gave it 4.5/5:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1878700,00.asp

Plus as some pointed out, the warranty covers the card as long as there are no physical modifications... i.e. you can overclock without voiding the warranty.

I know you all are recommending against it but I really want a 7000 series card, and this is my best chance at this point. For $299 shipped from Newegg, I don't know what more I could ask for.

If it doesn't work I'll come back so you can tell me 'told you so'...

@macgamesrule, Frag has a 6800gt setup ;)

I guarrantee my BFG's are better then any other GTX you can buy, not to mention the best support possible :D

better then any other

would be nice, but I'm going for "better than what I had" & "best bang for the buck". I realize money is no object to most of the people around this site, but it is for me ;)
