Ok so im currently running a Netgear DGN2000 but im on my 3rd in 2 years and I think I may be looking at a 4th soon so I want to renew I would like to avoid netgear if poss cos I heard they all have heat issues.

So I want the best router I can find basically my usage is alot of gaming xbox and pc I also stream from my pc to xbox and also from my NAS ontop of this there is a fair bit of torrent use all legal stuff of course .

I was also wondering if you can get 5 port routers instead of the standard 3 not essential.

Any ideas.

I use a Sitecom WL-350 and am happy with it. Performance has been excellent so far.

Running 2 Apple MacBooks (1 pro), 1 netbook on windows 7, my computer on windows 7 and an xbox. Also the occasional iPhone, iPod touch, and sometimes my Samsung Jet (although it's sh*t for just about everything including browsing the web, lol.) Torrents are the case here too, on both the MacBook Pro and my pc.

My router handles these things very well. I have only had to restart it once in the many months I've been using it, and that was my modem's fault.

An other option I considered was the D-Link DIR-855, and I would probably have gotten that one except availability was very poor at the time and it also cost more than the WL-350.

If I were to buy a new router right now, I'd go for either the Sitecom WL-350 Media Router, the Sitecom WL-309 Gaming Router II(I used its predecessor and it was amazing performance wise, but it came at a cost: it ran very hot and died because of it) or the D-Link DIR-855.

Now I'm sure different people on OC3D will recommend different routers so you'll probably end up with tons of good advice. However, You could always go to a local hardware store, buy the one they advise you to buy, and if it doesn't work for ya, return it! I did that, had a Netgear one before this but that one wouldn't work so I returned it, got my money back and got this one.

Ive got the current top of the range netgear with the gigabit switch and 5ghz dual band ect ect ect all built is was about £160, Ive only turned it off when Ive been working on other stuff other than that its been full proof.

If you want something really solid, the Draytek Vigor series are very good indeed, but not that cheap. I've never used one that wasn't excellent.

I was looking at the D link DGL-4500 XTREME N which has extra features to the 855 but its only available in the states and I dont know how that would tie up with BT.

Im gonna try to sell my dgn2000 to go back to my trusty 2700hgv

Unlock one, put custom firmware on (many available) and its unbeatable especially at the prices http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=2700hgv+&_sacat=0&_odkw=2700hgv+unlocked&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313

£20 average?!?!

With custom firmware you can hack up the wireless power and it holds a long line like no other.

I constantly lose sync on the dgn2000 but with that I never did...

So yeh

Deffo better than the dgn2000 altho it doesnt have wireless N or PnP (just means you have to setup the firewall for some things)

I have a Draytek Vigor, never had a problem with it, I also use a Netgear switch. the Draytrek routers aren't the cheapest, but they are very good

Drayteks are nice for setting up and leaving, especially if you use a lot of VPNs

(2820n is a nice router altho expensive, so many features tho)

It depends on what you're looking to do with it I guess.

I have a cheap adsl router (cost me £6 on ebay 2years ago) setup on a DMZ to my WRT54GS which is doing all the NAT/Firewall/QoS/Filtering etc etc

I was looking at maybe getting a new router recently and there seem to be a lot of nice routers which only cost £30-40 that run WRT based firmwares (found one with 5x1GB ports, triple Wireless N antennae and USB for £40)

If you want something that's just stable then drayteks are nice altho expensive.

If you want to mess about with stuff and maybe run network storage, services and custom firewalls then routers that support WRT firmwares are pretty cool and cheap.

I was also thinking of maybe getting a 2wire 2700 router for bridge mode on my network but was reading about some versions not being able to be unlocked from BT

draytec vigor 2800 here

brilliant router

ive been known for breaking routers

ive not had a single router last longer than a year

have bounced between belkin, netgear and linksys, and dlink

and found they all broke reasonably quickly

the draytec tho, 2 years, going strong

Im torn again is 1G worth it or will 10/100 be ok I dont want to spend over a £100 when the kit isnt upto par.

To be fair, I see 1G networking as standard now for a long time. Fast ethernet is ancient now. Good enough for just internet access tho.

It's one of the reasons I skipped the Draytek stuff. The best I could find was one with a single 1G port allowing you to buy another 1G switch to go with it - which is poor considering the money you pay for them.

Other than that, Draytek kit is excellent, particularly the user interfaces - not for the novice imo. Just a bit stuck in the past, again imo.

Would you need it ? Depends if you, or intend to in the future, copy files or media between pcs/laptops via the wired network - only you can answer that really.

ASUS make a gigabit router with Wireless N that is marketed for use with DD-WRT. It's under $50 too. Not sure if it's available where you're at though.
