What will happen if..

I put a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz HT processor into a motherboard that can only take a 400/533FSB?

Will it run but at a lower speed?

I've got a P4 2.53Ghz non-HT porcessor in there now, but have been given this HT one which I think needs a 800FSB.

Cheers.

It should run just fine, but at a lower FSB... Someone would be more qualified than I to answer that though, I completely skipped owning a personal P4 system in their entire lifespan.

Me too*

I'm glad to say ;)

Actually looking back on it, I kind of regret not at least building a P4 rig to play and clock/fold with. The P4's are just so darn easy to achieve awesome speeds with it's just fun to play with em, ya know? I overclocked my moms work rig like 350mhz and that was a sub $400 computer... Let's think about this, complete budget/craphouse parts ---- 350mhz OC. Try and do that with an AMD build, never happen with the same quality parts I used in that little workstation build. Crap mobo, crap RAM, crap PSU (well... decent PSU ;) don't cry Nick)... Pretty amazing stuff!

yes , however your speed will default from 14x200 = 2.8 ghz to 14x133 = 1865 ghz. Of course you can overclock the mobo but to what extent , depends on what kind of motherboard it is.

Yeah, 200MHz FSB shld be attainable :).

is the cpu you have a northwood or pressy and one your putting in ? pressys use more power then northwoods not all motherboards can supply them enugh power.

Doubt it, my geuss is bios is locked to 165 FSB.

Or else it would support 800fsb cpu's now wouldnt it?

The cpu will run @ 133fsb x 14 as said, and HT will most likely not work.
