What Movie Is This?

So I've been racking my brain over this movie I saw years ago. The details I have are sketchy...

Probably 70's
At the beginning an android escapes from a lab.
At the end the android finds a secret "base", which has 100's of previous generations of androids laid out on "slabs", then I think he dies...

It's not much to go on, but I just can't find the movie, its driving me nuts - any help much appreciated.

I think he dies as the next gen model is created??? So all good, sounds very similar to the Apple consumer model...

Actually he finds his way back to the "cave", where he finds his maker, who is an android, and his creator dies and you see all the other previous generations.

So each android creates the next improved gen.

Still haven't got a clue what its called...

I loved 70s movies. Many of my faves (and all time fave) were 70s.

Your GoogleFu is much better than mine because I spent over an hour looking & still couldn't find it.

I love these old movies, they make up for in the story what they lack in special effects. It's more about how they make you feel, reminds you of a time when you were young, & you thought you were going to have your own personal android. A copy of yourself, like Beta, in the last Star Fighter, so that they could go to school for you or do all that stuff you hated.... Dream on.....

Roller Coaster is my all time fave. Dirty Harry is amazing (all of them) and the early Death Wish too. Then Every Which Way etc. Some seriously good films. The Duel is fantastic too.
