What is a itainium processor for and why is it sooo expensive

i've heard bout them, they "aparantly" have a more efficient core that makes them run a lot cooler, and i think that u are suposed to run them in pairs...to make up the power...
 
Itanium is one of Intels server proccies, and I think it may run 12 operations per second, thus the low clock speed and high price tag.
 
I wouldn't mind a quad-core Itanium :D I bet that'll cost a pretty freakin' penny!

What I'm more patiently waiting for is the quad core Opteron! pwwwwwwwwwnage it shall be!

But I dont get it wouldn't a opteron be better than a $6000 itanium because I dont really see the point what is the chip used for scientific reasurch and would it be a quick caculator for equations etc and would it be good for gaming
 
No it won't be good for gaming and why would you buy a $6000 dollar chip :crazy:

Get a dual core opteron, and X2 or a single core opteron or even a San Diego

And now stop asking stupid questions and read the article
