Over recent years, the urge to incorporate perspex, strobing lights and extra bling into the humble computer has spread like wildfire throughout the PC hardware enthusiast community. Well, Western Digital has taken the last bastion of staid computing and made it...SEXY :yumyum: :p

It's called the RaptorX, a version of Western Digital's 10,000rpm Serial ATA hard drive that both a new capacity of 150Gb/ 16mb cache and a 'Perspex window' :worship: Designed to show off the spinning motor while not disrupting the fragile drive innards, I gotta get me some of these :D

Check them out here: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=190

The only prob with the Raptor X is that the MTBF is quite low compared to the standard model. I don't think this one dissipates the heat nearly as well, thus lowering its expected life span.

Cool looking drive if you have a way to show it off though!

do you no what the mtbf is on these, i was thinking of picking me up some for my new m2 rig later on in the year

....well they have a 5 year warranty, the same as Seagate - Specs But yes Fraggles is correct, the MTBF on the RaptorX is 1/2 the non-X model... 600,000 hours vs 1.2 million. HOWEVER, 600,000 hours is 25,000 days or 68+ years continous. Much longer than I'd expect that drive to be useful.

oooh thats sexy. Its ashame that the hard disks are probably the most hidden thing in 99% of cases :(

Thats nice but I would feel the need for some sort of fancy mounting fot it and I just cba

Anyhoo I've got me a Hitachi Deskstar :)

WD actually teamed up with an acrylic case maker and they have provided a spot to mount the hd on the side of the case w/ the acrylic portion of the drive facing out. Would be pretty sweet if u were in to acrylic cases, hehe.

Same point from here Frag, the MTBF is 50% of that of the Raptor 150's. (600000 hours for the X, as opposed to 1.2 million hours for the 150). It seems that the window traps in heat and ends up killing the drive. They should have used something like mineral glass rather than acrylic.
