weirdest problems ever encounted

over the years of fixing peoples computers and messing around with my own and new builds there isnt enough internet space of ammount of problems i have occurred.

the weirdest problem i every had is when i built my new rig.

put my computer together got windows going everything is fine. i install windows updates all the drivers except my gpu driver (asus 6950 2gb card)

when i installed the driver my computer bricked. now your thinking its a dodgy card etc. which i thought it was. after pressing f8 and set the computer to boot in vga format everything worked fine and set my resolution to the native setting of my monitor 1680x1080 then it bricked again, i mean computer unresponisive died. after lots of swear words i wanted to find the problem what was causing it. could it be my dvi cable? dvi port.

so i tested both dvi port to route down the problem so i can go back to my supply and get a new card. both dvi ports new cables created the same problem when the resolution was set to 1680x1080. i had then the hdmi port to test. so off i went down stairs kicked the family off the coronation st and plugged my mortally wounded rig in. the -removed- worked, on high res the same rest and even benchmarked it.

so off i went to scan with my new rig with somewhat fault.. i took my monitor with me for good messure i had a gut feeling telling me to take it with me.

when i got to the repairs and return bit i then proceeded to tell the tech guy what was going on and is it possible to get a replacment card. i then tested it rigged up to a 22inch monitor the same as mine and set the resolution up to 1680x1050. it worked right off the bat, i was like wtf. (card in a differnt rig) then i thought power supply issues. we then tested that and it was all fine. i put my card back in my rig then tested it with the same monitor and what do you know worked fine.

after running back to the car i brought my old monitor in and hooked up thinking have i been hulicinating or something, turned the computer on then bam bricked my system. after 30 mins of trying to work out why my computer was bricking he got a other 6950 card out of the back and put it in my rig. it bricked again. every 6950 and 6970 in differnt rigs at scan my monitor was somehow bricking the computers. we tested it on the 5xx nvidia cars worked fine. in the end i had to buy a new monitor but out of all us and other customers we could not work out why the monitor was bricking on 6900 cards. not even trailing the internets could i find a other person with the same problem. the monitor in question is on a other computer running a 4850 card and not a problem lol.

sorry for the wall text but it was the most bizzar problem i have ever had.

if you guys want to share your stories post away

now i'm puzzled, could it be that the native res of the monitor is diffrent than what it makes your pc think it is ? or a power issue with the monitor sending power to the gpu ?

ive been asking these questions my self. i have n oidea ive looked at the specs for it

its a hp hw22inch monitor if i remember right it just doesnt like 6xxx cards lol

had an issue once where I built a new pc everything new went to power it up and nada no beeps burps light or anything. So I took it back apart reseated everything and still nada. I was like wtf is going on here so once again back to tearing it all down carefull inspecting as I went for shorts or anything that would cause it to do nothing. Found nada tried it again and this time when plugging everything back in to the surge protector I saw what was wrong :slap head: I didnt plug in the surge protector

I admire your candid honesty and ability to laugh at yourself. ...if not your trouble shooting flow chart.....

can you hear your rig's POST beep?

if yes:

did you consider manually choosing the input on your 22'' HP display? i know they're really slow switching sometimes, got three of them in front of me. i fixed this disabling other inputs or not allowing the display scanning the other inputs for signal.

did you try DVI/Displayport (digital, without vga-adapter) instead of HDMI?

best regards

lol yeah I laughed alot over that but as to the trouble shooting lol I didnt unplug it to start with so it never occured to me lol

My most recent PC powers on when I turn on my desk fan lol. Because I broke the on button, I rigged a couple wires from the switch to the top of the pc. about a foot or so long, I touch the ends together to power up the PC. I guess the Electromagnetic pulse from turning on the fan generates a charge in the wires that makes the PC turn on. I can get that broke pc to turn on now but no longer will connect to internet and most programs and hardware dont work on it anymore. But Ill post a video of the fan making the pc turn on when I post my new rig pics. It was annoying when I was done for the night, shut down the pc, and then when I turn off the desk fan the PC goes back on again lol.
