WD Raptor 74 GB Hard Drive SATA ( WD740GD )

Hi guys,

Thinking about buying a new hard drive, it will be the primary hard disk used for windows and games mostly.

Been thinking about the WD Raptor 74 GB SATA Hard Drive, Im not after huge storage, as I have a 200gb to keep all my media files on. Just after a fast hard drive for windows and games. Fast load times etc

Is the WD Raptor 74 GB Hard Drive worth the high price tag? Its 74gb which is enough for what I need out of it, but I can get a 80gb IDE for about a 1/3 of the cost of a raptor.

Whats your thoughts? :p

save the money, get the 36gb and useit solely for your windows files. store everything else on your 200gb

Go with the 74, you wont be dissapointed! The 74 uses a fluid bearing unlike the 36 which is a nice benefit when ur spinning at 10k rpm.

I luff mine to death, both of mine in RAID 0 slay hd benchies.

ok im going to go for the 74gb after hearing some execellent reviews. I also heard it out performs the 36gb version.

However I might try and purchase it on Ebay new. Raptor has 5 year warranty, but do Western Digital have a good customer service base?, and would they replace my drive. if it failed with no hassle, and with speed. Or would they send me to the retailer, for them to sort out, and generally mess me about.

Any experiences of this? let me know.

Yes, they have EXTREMELY fast service and usually cross-ship HDD's, which is...you request RMA, you ship HDD, they ship HDD.

They recieve it, they dont pwn you.

They dont recieve it, you're pwned :D.

so it would be safe to purchase one off ebay?

Personally I wouldn't. I suggest getting one from Newegg because they're going to stand behind the product 100% and give u verification of purchase from an authorized WD vendor. If u get one off of ebay from a shady company and try and send it in to WD they may squabble if you can't give them good enough documentation on the place of purchase.

I'd personally play it safe and Newegg it :)

actually they ship first, then you ship :)

frag FEAR is a UKer, im sure you know your way around UK shops FEAR. kustompc's being the best of course but possibly slightly more expensive.

thanks for the advice, as I live in England, I cant use newegg, but I will order from www.overclockers.co.uk, as they have good customer service, and I bought my cpu, mobo, graphics card from them, makes sense to buy the HD from them too.

Or I will try Kustompcs.co.uk,

Its worth paying the little extra for piece of mind knowing you will get the best customer service if you have any problems! I found ordering goods from the cheapest site isnt normally the best thing to do, as I have had so many problems with poor customer service. Took me over 2 weeks to get my speakers exchanged once when they sent me the wrong ones, and they made me pay for delivery both ways to rectify their mistake. Shocking. Not ordering from there again!

Guess Ive just answered my question!

www.overclockers.co.uk do not have good customer service. i have had no probs, but if something was to ever go wrong good luck trying to contact them.

cant vouch for kustompc's enough, the peace of mind is priceless.

thanks for the tip

well, we had PSU blow up on us, and overclockers sent a courier to come pick it up. Cant get much better I dont think. Answered every phone call and email quickly

Damn thats very good service. I heard they were getting better but thats excellent :D

I can vouch for www.tekheads.co.uk being very good :D :wavey:

Putting the raptor aside,

Ive read that the new Samsung SpinPoint P SATA 2 is a very good drive?, recieving many editors choice awards for "bang for buck".

what about 2 x Hitachi Deskstars in raid

im after speed over size on this one. as I have another hard drive already for storage of media etc.

windows speed lately seem to rely mostly on access times and so raptors cant be beaten. however write times they can be beaten.

at the end of the day you get what you pay for, but if you want speed then i recommend the raptor.

concerning ocuk, i cant believe that! maybe they are getting better because ive heard nothng but bad about their customer service.

ill keep it in mind :)
