Windows users contemplating the cost of upgrading to Vista may need a fatter wallet than they thought. Besides shelling out for faster hardware, users should expect to pay for Vista upgrades for many of their favorite Windows software.

I don't see how that's microsoft's fault that 3rd party's are choosing to release new products for vista compatibility

A more suitable title: "Vista's pay as you groan plan".

But agreed, I think software makers will have to make significant changes to their products in order for it to work properly with Vista's security features and other features/changes. So creating a new 'Designed for Vista' product and charging for it seems justified imo.

I think it`s something users should bare in mind more than anything else.

If you want to jump on the Vista wagon as soon as it comes out, then you`ve gotta accept this as a possible issue for you.

I don`t think complaints of "I`ve only just bought xyz - and now I gotta buy an extension/upgrade/new product" actually cut it.

If on the other hand you bide your time, knowing that you`ve only just bought xyz, and prehaps port to Vista after a certain period - you`d normally expect software companies to release chargable updates, however bogus, after prehaps a year of the last version.

Consumers need to prehaps think more about their overall picture and not jump on the OS as soon as it comes out coz it`s the latest thing to have. Sure if u know u`r softwares gonna work fine with it, then knock u`rself out.

But the most common Adobe etc stuff works fine with Vista, and features that mimic pretty much everything Symantec sell have been added to Vista. What else do you need? :\

Symantec are probably contacting workers of the software companies they`ve sunk to find out what Vista is all about.

God I hate talking about Symantec, I feel dirty now, need to scrub and shower.

Atleast I can talk about m$ without feeling dirty. (just check my wallet a minute)

dont forget to take into fact that dell are now selling all their pre-built systems with a version of vista on and ime sure pc world etc and all other stores worldwide are doing it too.

so the majority of the public are being 'forced' onto one version of vista or another..

and please stop saying m$ for christ sake.

Raging.

whats new is how much difference there is,vista is nearly a whole new os

it was designed from ground up,not derived from any other windows kernel or anything afaik.
