i can put a blank dvd in and it spins up, recognises the blank and says do i wish to format. if i click yes then it just hangs

its a samsung drive that was working fine. now it doesn accept any media - cd or dvd blank or written

have googled a few things that suggested removing and rebooting. that didnt work. also tried a reg change, which didnt help.

running out of ideas!

it is a 20x sammy.

it worked fine. i installed vista no trouble. it's just gone and i cant do anything to get it back.

it was set up with cable select and had another ide HDD on the same cable, also with cable select.

GRRRR cant believe this cant be sorted.

Have you tried putting in a bootable CD and rebooting to see whether or not it's Windoze or the drive, or possibly something else?

To me it just sounds like ur drive to a crap on ya. My moms work computer decided to eat it's DVD-RW and DVD-ROM drive within 2 days of each other, different brands too. Slapped a fresh set in and they've both been working perfectly for over a year now. Optical drives are realllll finnicky it seems.

i could understand if it didnt work to start off with... but not to work then stop working and never work again.

gonna try a reinstall

can you see it in disk management before you do a reinstall. Or even see it in device manager?

cant see it in device manager. cant see it in disk management. i can see it in "my computer" but it wont accept any discs.

when i boot up, it doesnt show the drive in post, but when the gigabyte controller kicks in, it finds the drive.

now here is where it gets funny.

if i turn the gigabyte controller OFF, the drive is seen when i post and boot up. but, when it gets to windows, it doesnt show the drive in either device manager OR My Computer.

either way, its pretty borked and im not impressed that a pretty important bit of kit just decides it doesnt want to work in vista and theres nowt i can do about it.

dont see why they are like this. no other hardware is quite so temperamental.

bugger. looks like im ordering a new odd. probs go for sata. what u guys think?

oh, and can i rma my old drive seeing as it's less than a month old?

Just fudging ordered a 20x Samsung >.< lol

However, been using 2 of them in XP for a week and all is well...

Wonder if there`s a Vista thing going on, and there`s a subsequent firmware upgradability ?!?!

You may have a corrupted cd-rom driver issue (i.e filter driver was installed that is causing the device stack for your burner to not work). In order to fix it you may have to remove upper and lower registry filters.

Yeah did thay - upper/lower filters.

Turns out, after I took an IDE drive off the same channel, I'd left the ODD as slave when it was the only device on the channel. changed to CS and used the second connector on the ribbon cable (as this was the one that reached) rebooted and all is fine.

Cheers :)
