Vista Adoption Now... A Big Mistake?

Looking to purchase Vista come the 30th January? A rather scathing article has emerged online, and the author is touting Vista as the best OS ever...but just don't buy it! Are the points raised in the article valid or flawed? We'd be interested to hear your take on it below...

Flawed... I think Vista is great and people should start upgrading. The revisions that they've made to the actual base code of the OS is for the better. It's fast, friendly, and it looks good to boot.

Overall I like vista I have been using it for a fair while and cant wait for my copy to come through in the post

I think it would be a good idea to wait a while, especially for business'. Mainly because of the problems seen when XP was released.

Luckily we stopped most companies from buying XP but a few bought it and it ended up costing them a lot of time and money to put the problems right. The main ones being with Sage Accounting software and other problems including drivers & networking :(

The people who have been really into vista already will probably buy it tho, which is fair enough if they like it.

There are some good points in the computerworld article. A lot of them are the same as XP back when it was released.

The main points being:

  • Microsoft is already planning its first service pack

  • ATi/AMD Catalyst Vista Software Driver is "beta"

  • Creative Soundblaster Drivers "beta" (some)

  • To get full value from Vista, you're probably going to want to buy a new, Vista-optimized PC

Microsofts Version of Apples Spotlight, not so good?

  • Vista's new indexed searching is great, but you'll need extra hard disk space for the index

I would imagine by Q2 a lot of what eq mentioned will be ironed out. I think software developers are pretty excited about Vista and are striving to make their software compatible with the new power-house.

I will dual boot first off. Vista is great to my eyes, nothing wrong with making an OS more like OSX :)

There's some drawbacks, especially for 64bit, but hopefully we'll get more support after SP1

Might be interesting if the rumour about apple making osx run on pc's before the end of the year (quoted from someone in Apple) is true

Also the people at Parallels are supposedly working on getting their software to run osx on a standard pc (pos EFI emulation? :) )

Ye I think getting it to run on PC's would be sweet, I'd dual boot Mac OSX for sure, though they have some work to do to get driver support for the sheer amount of PC hardware out there

If apple went to PC(with drivers and everything else), im sure it wont be virus, boot or idiotically proof like it has been.

If it did make the transition over to end-user PC's the security level would definately be compromised as the amount of OSX users would increase by a boatload and hackers would start cranking out the viruses and spyware before long at all.

Possibly, altho the security 'should' be inherently better than windows as it is based on unix.

There are a few viruses etc on osx atm, but most of them are minor and have been fixed quickly.

I guess your viewpoint on it differs with how you see hackers/virus makers (as in why they do it).

I doubt the uprising of viruses or spyware would grow on osx as much as some would believe.

Look how easy it is to infect a windows system with a rootkit, in some cases it's a matter of installing a service/driver. Something which most windows machines wouldn't even question. Especially as they are initialised by windows components.

I don't think everyone would get on with or respect osx tho tbh.

*watches thread drift off-topic*

They are basicaly saying what ive been saying, just wait till certain things are ironed out and full support is availible. I dont believe you should switch over to a Mac just cause of this though, which is what i disagree with. XP is still good, so i say just wait then Vista should rock your condom off.

Most of the new features in vista are from osx tho

Swap to a Mac because of Vista?

Gonna w8 a whole while myself, atleast til sp1, until I see it as the main OS for my pcs. One will have it installed as a goof to see what`s going on.

Not going to be seeing it @ work until atleast 2008, XP is still providing issues, but they don`t condone a service level until it`s neigh-on 99% solid. Hence their XP ~feels~ just about SP2 and a bit atm. Each time a progression is made, new bulletins about faults and issues flood in via our emails so that we`re aware of them. (this is XP just past sp2) - bit different to using it at home I guess. Hell - we won`t see ie7 for months yet.

OSX is gonna take some real prizing into the shoes of an x86 computer, there are basic things that the OS is based on that 68k native code can do that the x86 still "emulates", I`m sure they`re working hard on that. Big step backwards again imo, going with the money and not progress.

Not going to say too much but have you seen the pirates of silicon valley? or know about it?

Think you should have a look.

I'm not sure how many features osx has that were 'original' in windows tbh.

Something to do with the fact microsoft copied apple's software, edited it and renamed it

Woo, didnt know they made a film/documentory about it. Will have to hunt around for it. Ta!

Think there`s been 2 films atleast about the evil gates. The one mentioned got the most publicity I reckon. Then there`s books.
