Virgin Media

OK so I have finially spoke to my landlord about getting Virgin Media, and he has agreed, As you can see from my speed tests BT are shocking (No Surprise There) what I want to know from you guys, is Virgin Media fully unlimited????? As my BT internet is meant to be, but every month I get a speed restriction warning and at peak time my speed goes to less than 1mb.

Thinking about going for the 30mb BB, 65 TV Channels & Unlimited weekend calls (I never used the main landline anyway, just there for the internet) Virgin media are offering all this for £20 a month for first 6 months and then £25 a month after that, I am thinking this is a good deal, as I currently pay £40 a month to BT for Option 3 BB, and Option 1 Phone.

Also another question if you go fully with Virgin Media, does that get rid of BT completely, or do you still have to pay BT line rental.

Am seriously looking into this, is it easy thing to change????

Thanks in advance guys.

you can get line rental with virgin media i think, and just have a quick look on their website for a fair usage policy or give it a quick google

Virgin might charge you about 50 quid for installing their line i think

Virgin media is only ultimate if you go for the 50Mb of xxl package. All the others have speed throttling and download restrictions. I don't have it myself but my friend has it and he downloaded 1.2TB in a month enough said. He has now switched to the 100Mb line but you have to be a VIP member to get that. You should think about the 50MB or someday you will get throttled if your a heavy user.

virgin broadband is only unlimited for XL packages (50mb+). i have the XL package and i am never capped or throttled back. (XXL is the TV package)

AFAIK, 20mb is partly unlimited... excessive use at peak times will result in your download bandwidth being throttled back (upload speeds wont be touched). become a nightowl, and you will be okay - lol

same as ionicle here

the only thing we can get is adsl max. not even adsl2 never mind cable or fibre.

so still paying £20 odd a month for up to 8mbps and thats just for the net.

sigh

we only got orange and talktalk LLU in the area last year and thats nothin to shout about...

bigian, get them to install in my area plz

Sorry if this is an old topic, I'm new here...

A word of caution concerning VM

There are in the middle of rolling out much faster cable connections. However there are some major quality issues. The issues show themselves as packet loss and extreme high ping. The VM forums are buzzing with people with the same problems. I have had Cable since it came to Portsmouth around 20 years ago, Cable internet from day one of it being available. On the 19th of this month the guys from BT are coming to fit a phone line and ADSL! This is like putting neddels in my eyes but it has to be done. I will be dropping from 50Meg to around 16Meg. This is in the full knowledge that 100Meg will be here in Pompey in a few months. If this was water you could say that there is plenty in the pipe but it tastes funny! It's a fire hose of brown water. You can have the fastest download speed in the world but if every game server kicks you for high ping what is the point? Heck when it's bad the wife can't even play farmville, and you know you have to have some bad ping if Farmville lagges out!

So VirginMedia, technically should be the best internet connection. They own the biggest pipes and if your street has cable it should be a no brainer. But from bitter personal experience VM can kiss my........

50mb is "unlimited", but my mate who used to have 50mb got a very big cap on his line due to downloading so much data.

Nothing is really unlimited but as long as you don't download loads you will be fine.

why are BT messing with fibre optics - they are copperheads ???

EDIT: are you switching? (i may have misread you)

BT Infinity, they started rolling it out recently, their own fiber optic cable. Clearly they were upset that people could get internet without paying them for line rental.

but BT optics will only be to the switcher in your area - it will be copper from the switchbox to your house - it sorts of defeats the object - lol

plus infinity is upto 40mb

VM have had the capabilities to deliver faster than 100mb for a long time now. they have just been waiting for this to happen.

they will say (have said) "we see your 40, and raise you 100"

lol
