USB crashing issues

Hi having some issues with my usb devices using a Rampage 5 Edition 10 motherboard and when I plug in usb devices all the usb ports will disconnect then reconnect with a usb device not recognised error this is what I have found out so far.

1) Seems to be only usb 3 ports although not proven yet. Edit its only usb 3 device in a usb 3 socket. usb 2 devices will work fine in usb 3 socket and usb 3 device will work ok in usb 2 socket. usb 3 in usb 3 crash.

2) Tested fault on front and rear usb ports so not a case issue.

3) Restarting the PC fixes the issue I can then plug in unplug multiple times and it works fine.

4) Shut down then turn on usb ports crash after restart all fine.

So at first I thought it was a case issue but the rear ports same issue proved that not to be the case (pun not intended). I reinstalled usb 3 drivers still NG.

I'm hoping its not a hardware issue with the motherboard as I don't think I had this issue before I reinstalled windows but can't be sure. But if it was a hardware issue why does the fault go away after a restart if the hardware was faulty wouldn't it do it all the time.

Any ideas apart from reinstalling windows and trying I'm out of ideas. Also like to point out all devices work in other PC's fine.

I wouldn't say that. Maybe people just don't know what's wrong and instead of posting for the sake of it have just kept out of it?

Any way, one thing I can tell you is that the problem should not be consistent on your USB3 and USB2 ports as they will be running completely separately of each other. As in totally different controllers, so if you're getting the same issue then it should be a software, rather than hardware fault.

If it isn't a software fault (and I'm guessing you are using Win 10 which is a POS IMO) then it is likely to be an issue with the USB3 controller. I'm pretty sure that the front ports will run from the same controller too, so if there is a hardware fault it should be consistent on the front ports too.

Personally I think you should disconnect all of your drives, download the very latest 10 build and try a fresh install and see if you can replicate the problem. If you can then try Windows 7 and see if that does the same. That is probably going to be the best way of testing it without ripping your PC to bits.

EDIT. And check you are on the latest bios. It could be something as simple as that.

Or grab a Ubuntu iso and run it from USB, then try your ports again which should then confirm if its just windows or your board.

Yeah. that's another way you could shake it :)

I've had so many issues with Windows 10 lately it's not even funny any more. I've had to install the whole thing from scratch three times now because they can't get their older versions to update properly so you end up having to download a newer build and reinstall. So many issues but the internet is just the worst.

It kinda forced me to install Linux and I am bloody well glad I did now !

I've been having a similar problem with my Gigabyte GA-X99 Ultra Gaming motherboard. The USB ports will all disconnect and restart or lock up the pc.

It would happen a lot when starting a games like CS:GO with multiple USB devices connected like my Blue Yeti Microphone, Corsair K95 keyboard, Mionix Naos 7000 mouse, USB hubs, external 3TB hard drive, Epson R300 printer and such.

I tried disconnecting all the different devices trying to figure it out and some seemed to help for a while. Then I found out it happens whenever I have the Epson R300 printer on and try to go into games.

I tried updating the drivers, bios and windows, nothing seemed to help. Maybe the R300 is just too old now and screwing with my USB. It's a strange issue, & not having the R300 on unless needed is a bandage fix. Do you have any super old USB devices connected, it might be worth a look if you do.

Thanks for the ideas. Will give the Ubuntu idea a try.

really hope it isn't the motherboard and the pc is watercooled and don't really want to rip it apart. I'm hoping a hardware issue with the usb controller would mean that it would not work all the time as currently a PC restart solves the issue and can plug in as many usb 3 devices I want until I shut down the PC then it starts all over again.
