I don't know what the specific problem is, but I broked my girlfriends laptop over easter and couldn't boot windows. I managed to recover it using the program... Spinrite(clicky). It makes a bootable disc and does a check disc kind of thing I guess.

Seems to be fine now :) Had some corrupted bits which the program managed to fix.

Bah! 30 mins too late mate... Fresh install over here. I had pretty much everything backed up on my storage drive but I think I'll make an image when I get everything sorted this time.

Lost all my saved games/installs etc. Not the end of the world but annoying!

Still sucks to lose a lot of un-important data...Everytime a harddrive fails, God kills a kitten, or something like that. :P

Food for thought: if your raid0 array had been truly corrupted then the computer would be completely unable to load anything from its drives -- especially safemode. Additionally, assuming no hardware problems exist, one can attempt to recover corrupt data using utilities readily available on a Windows disk.

Noted. With hindsight I probably could have recovered it better but I did what I thought I had to do at the time. It won't take long to set everything back to how I like it and I will deffo make an image this time.

It was the file system that had gone. I could boot into safe mode but trying to access programs on the c:\ (the raid0 array) threw up a 'blah blah blah path is corrupt run chkdsk blah' error.

Thanks to everyone for your input :)
