Upgrading

I want to upgrade my CPU but unsure the best way to go about it.

I have a AsRock Extreme 4 990FX motherboard and a AMD Piledriver FX- 6 core 6300 Black Edition 3.50MHz (Socket AM3+)Processor running at 4.1MHz.

Lately I have had the odd freeze or unexpected shut down and the temp senor on the chip has gone nuts. My ? is do I just replace the chip like for like or go for a FX-8 core 8 or FX-8 core 9 Piledriver now with the later I would have to get a new Board as the Extreme 4 could not run it.

I also want to get a Water Cooling kit maybe an Alfacool or XSPC Raystorm kit I have tried the Corsair H105 but after taking it in and out of different cases, 1 of the connection to the pump came off with the tubing attached, tried in vain to bleed the air out but without a res impossible to do.(NOOB ERROR)

So I have a max of £400 to spend

Any suggestion ,help, kick up the backside in the right direction would be greatly appreciated

You can't run a 9590 on that motherboard. I actually suspect that motherboard is the thing causing you the issue. Those Asrock 'boards can be pretty junky.

If I`m going to look for another board, I could look into an Intel Core i5 chip, although I have never used 1 always stuck with AMD.I do not want a 9590 as that would blow half my budget.
My rig is 90% gaming I have no ideas regarding Intel and have watched all of Toms reviews
Lately there have been so many boards coming out its a nightmare, so ideas on a postcard (just kidding ) I would like to still use my MSI Twin Frost Geforce GTX760.
So If you have any ideas on board and chip, or just a decent board that I can work with.
many thanks

I can strongly recommend the Asus Z97-A. There is an identical one with black pcb and silver heatsinks, called Z97-AR Ticks all the boxes for me and it was under 140€

Edit: Tom did a review on it: Link

The i5 will best/be a few frames behind a 9590 so its a no brainer really. i5+ a solid value z97 and you've got a decent gaming rig that'll hold its own for a good few years.

Had a look at the following bundle

Asus Z97-K - Devils Canyon Core i5 4690K Bundle from Overclockers £261.00

CPU:
Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devils Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor

Motherboard:
Asus Z97-K Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

I also had a look at just a new motherboard for my AMD chip

Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £126.00

Could you let me know if you think the Intel bundle is worth the money

It'd depend what games you play as to how much of a benefit you'd get from switching but I'd go down that route.

I play any and all, F1,Borderlands,Call Duty,Battlefield,Crysis,Assassins Creed, I play a lot.
I wont have a problem with my memory that should be ok
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 16GB (2 x 8G)

This would also mean a clean Windows install, so might look into getting an SSD that way I can then copy anything over later in the build.

Oh forgot to ask can the chip be overclocked.

Can you have a look at this bundle looks a better deal and color scheme
