hi all

i know i dont post much on this forum but i wanted peoples opions before i order anything, i have been researching over the last 2 weeks components for a upgrade.

here is a list of the items that i have my eye on at the moment

CPU - Intel Q6600 95W version

Mobo-Asus stiker extreme 680i

Case -Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case

Ram -4GB(4x1GB) Corsair Dominator, PC2-8500

PSU -900w Tagan TG-900-U33

CPU cooler - Coolermaster Hyper TX 2

i know i havent put any hard drives or gfx cards down there but i have got them from my old system.

i will look into a GFX card upgrade later on in the year as well as upgrading to vista to address that 4 GB of ram.

please dont post crap like "oh why are you getting that for"

if anyone has anything they would like to suggest component wise then please feel free.

i would like to thank you for having the time to read thought this thread.

admin, sorry if i have put this is in the wrong section in the forums but i could not find a upgrade section

many thanks for your help and comments

Do you know if there's any real performance difference between the 95W version and the other version?

i dont think there is either but i have been looking into that and some review websites say that one is the better for overclocking witch i am thinking about doing.

added cpu cooler.

Yeah, that setup is perfect from my point of view. ;)

Maybe a little overkill on the PSU.

And stick with the 95watt version CPU. Kicks arse!

nice one for the comments

the thing with the psu is i havent got the money to upgrade my GFX cards as of yet but i am thinking along the lines of 2 x 8800 GTX's or GT havent thought about that one yet, and i dont want to mess about taking the psu out and changing it in 5-6 months time

isn't the '95w' version the G0?

Iv'e got 2 suggestions,

1st off are you going SLI? Cos i wouldn't bother with the striker if your not. A decent P35/X38 board would be a better option. And if you are going SLI you may as well opt for a 780i board tbh.

2nd don't make much difference in the long run but why not 2x2GB sticks? Leaves expansion room if needed and youve got a (slim) chance of obtaining 1t.

Other than them minor things all looks good!

yes i am running SLi, i was thinking about the 780i board (Asus Striker II) but i havent really got the cash for the top of the range boards

all in all i think im going to go with this setup.

i wouldnt get the striker, you cant overclock quad cores on it, i just sold myn for that exact reason :)

i have a friend with the same setup and he has overclocked his quad with to 3.2Ghz

all you need to do is update the bios im told and you can overclock quads

anyway thats the setup i have chosen and im sticking with it.

noo, i got mine to 3ghz, you can go a bit further, but too overclock a quad at all you need an older bios and you have to put a lot of volts through the NB and cpu FSB.... its not good for the board, and it gets real toasty unless you water cool... so not realy recomended.

Well I use 680i so its still same stuff striker extreeme w/e it is, all 680i.

I cant find anything wrong with oc'ing since i used p03 I changed t p06 recently still works fine.

In what ways is a older BIOS better?

noo, the striker is completely different, its not reference design, so whereas you got a quad core update (maybe not you personally but reference boards did) for quad cores the striker never did.
