which would give me the most performance/balance

would all be w/c

6300-8800 gtx or 6600-8800 gts?

asus m/board-which model?

2gb or 4gb?

would the 8800gtx be slowed down by the 6300?

I agree. Most E6300's will do at least 3.3-3.4GHz on air. That will be more than enough. Pair that with (brand of choice) 8800GTX & some good 2GB RAM (D9 or Promos, depending on budget) and you'll have a great rig.

Oh yeah, and a P5B Deluxe. ;)

Captain XMS' favorite motherboard, lol.

I got my e6300 and ocz special ops ram to 2.8ghz easily on my first ever oc, and still able to go higher i think :)

Well no, its just cheaper for near enough the same performance although e6600 can go to 4ghz and i havent heard of a e6300 doing this.

thks for all input.

with the cost of 6300 over 6600 this would allow me to go from 8800gts to gtx, although was looking at pre-clocked models [8800gts]so cost might not be that different.

with regard to mem would using 2gb single dimm versus 2*1gb dimm affect performance a great deal? thinking long term in utilsing dimm slots.

Not sure on the 2gb DIMMs yet - they may be a bit slow right now so it's probably worth getting 2 x 1gb now

No point getting a pre-clocked card tbh: if you can afford it get a GTX

I'd go for 2x1gb so that you can make use of DC. Also I'd imagine that 2gb sticks are pretty poor clockers (don't quote me).

thks-looks like gtx for me.

with regard to mem and asus deluxe m/board-noticed on nicks thread, box pic with kingston mem image. as a-one used this combo?

Yeah I've used the P5B with HyperX and it works well. The label on the front of the box is only really to show that the board is capable of working at PC2-8500 & Kingston were the only people at the time that had RAM rated that high.

thks.only used kingston once in someones elses pc but run ok.

the e4300 vrs 6300 - does the 6300 fsb make it a better o/c than the e4300, or is it even stevens?
