I wouldn't rule out the second hand market for an upgrade route if you need maximum bang for minimum bucks... there are some R9 290X cards on eBay starting around the £200 mark.
I have now bought the ASUS R9 290X (Was £210 at OCUK and free delivery). I wish I had held out for a few days and bought the 290X Vapor-X from Aria at £215 but whatever.
Either of the cards required a mod to the case. All we did was remove the HDD cage using a hammer and dremel. Then we mounted the SSD and HDD in the 5.25 inch bays.
We mounted the graphics card in the second PCIE X16 slot because otherwise we would have had to cut the floor of the 5.25 bays as well. The removal of the HDD cage creates good airflow for one of the fans on the ASUS, which should reduce some of the airflow lost my placing the card lower down.
And all this without removing the motherboard or Noctua NH-D14 when modding the case.
Tbh the Vapor x has the better cooler than the Asus what are the cards temps like under load just out of interest?. I want to water cool mine but I cant find a water block atm hopefully Sapphire will bring out the 390X Vapor X which may have the same pcb
You made a good choice going with the Vapor x they are a fantastic card I want to water cool mine but I cant find a water block atm hopefully Sapphire will bring out the 390X Vapor X which may have the same pcb
The Vapor-X deal has ended. And I've already put the card in!
Trust me it was tempting but money & the fact that this is temporary... I would have had to pay postage on the Aria deal and paid to send the card back to OCUK.
To answer your earlier question, I get around 75 degrees in Battlefield 3 on Ultra at 1440p. The fans were less than 50% as well. I know the thermal performance isn't that great but then neither was my HAWK. It sounded like it was taking off if I played anything more demanding than CS:GO.
