Upgrade, 5 years in making

Hello guys and girls!

I have finally arrived at the point of upgrading my system:

MB: Gigabyte ga-x58a-ud3r
CPU: i7 930
Ram: Corsair 6gb 1600mhz (3x2gb)
GFX: msi gtx 760

My girlfriend wants a computer, so I am donating the above parts to her.

I will be keeping my Fractal Define r5, corsair H110i gt and 240gb SSD.

Intended purchase :

MB: asus maximus vii ranger
CPU: i5 4690k
RAM: kingston HyperX 16gb 1866mhz (2x8gb)
GFX: msi gaming 970
PSU: corsair rm750i

I put the rm750i in there as it cheaper for me than the rm650i. The msi gaming 970 I bought used today, very cheap.

Main usage is gaming, I would love to run the cpu @ 4.4ghz or in that ballpark. I am a computer science student, so a lot of programming and occasional VMware. I have considered getting a cheap aoc 27" 1440p monitor. The way I work when programming, I like to have multiple class windows open along with a browser and terminal. Emacs ftw.

Is this overkill for my intended usage? Should I get a cheaper motherboard, 8gb of ram and a i7 4790k for future proofing?

Is there any reason for going with the 970? I would personally have a look at the R9 390 you will get more "bang for buck there buddy" :p

Hi

I'm really happy with Nvidia, also one of my frequently played games does not like AMD very much. Also I got the 970 for 277 euro second hand, a new r9 390 would have set me back 398 euro.

I'd wait for the Skylake cpus to be released before you buy the rig, unless you have to buy it right now. A RM550 is all you need for that rig.

Your rig is very similar to mine

I'm waiting for Skylake ( and money ), I'd say you should too.

That makes sense, still happy I got a cheap 970 though. Any predictions as to when skylake will be available?

Cheers

Tomorrow

Well, only the 6700K and 6600K and availability won't be that good

However I think that prices and availability will stabilize in some weeks

I think I am now leaning towards the 6700k, Asus Z170-A and corsair 8gb lpx 3200.

Waiting another 2-3 weeks won't kill me. Opinions?

Stop it. Get yourself a Xeon X5650 and throw it in your board and hey presto, 4790k performance for about £60.

With DX12 coming there's no reason to upgrade any further CPU wise because you are basically getting a 990x providing you overclock it. They usually do 4.2ghz easy.

Then spend the rest on a 980ti.

That's about platform upgrade...

With my X58 I only have USB2 and SATA2, a platform update is a good thing after all this time

I am a tad worried about the age of my 1366 motherboard, it used to run my i7 930 @ 4.4ghz. Nowadays it will only run stable @ 3.4ghz, I have speculated about my age old psu being the culprit.

Regardless I need a second system, my better half is inheriting the one I have in order to fuel her diablo 3 addiction.

Then buy a SATA III and USB III PCIE card dude. Up to you but I know what I would do...

Not the same thing. Moreover there's stuff like M.2 which will become more and more popular.

Still PCIe 2.0, 45nm etc. I love my 920, it's a good overclocker ( 3.67-3.85 turbo with 1.23V max under load and 0.88V at idle ) but I'm going to need a second PC for university, while I will leave my current one at home.

So I'm aiming towards Z170, if the price drops. If not, I'll consider buying a 5820K

Hi guys

I'm back with an update! I will be going for the i7 5830k, ASUS x99-A/USB 3.1. Now I was wondering if anyone had some recommendations regarding ram. 16gb 4x4gb should be enough? Or do I need to stretch myself to 32gb?

Trying to get something in the midrange in terms of price. Also I live in Norway, if that is any help in terms of recommendations.

Cheers

What's the highest frequency RAM you can find in your budget? That's probably the one you want to choose lol

However Haswell-E CPUs can't go that high with RAM... 2666 to 3000 MHz is the sweet spot for X99 ( price/performance ). Lower timings are good since it's a quad channel setup, which naturally adds latency

Isn't there a bit of an issue with the 5820k and fast ram?

Unless you're bothered about BCLK clocking then just get the regular stuff. Overclock will be done on multi mostly any way.
