"Work on the future of Unreal Tournament begins today, and we’re happy to announce that we’re going to do this together, with you. We know that fans of the game are as passionate about Unreal Tournament as we are. We know that you have great ideas and strong opinions about where the game should go and what it should be. So let’s do something radical and make this game together, in the open, and for all of us.

We’ve created a small team of UT veterans that are beginning work on the project starting today.
From the very first line of code, the very first art created and design decision made, development will happen in the open, as a collaboration between Epic, UT fans and UE4 developers. We’ll be using forums for discussion, and Twitch streams for regular updates.

When the game is playable, it will be free. Not free to play, just free.
We’ll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists and gamers can give away, buy and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic. That’s how we plan to pay for the game."

This has the makings of a great game. No kickstarter, no promises, no dodgy publishers/developers, just the devs and the community.

Not sure how the free free plan is gonna work out for them but hopefully that won't be the downfall of the game.

Oh hell yeah!

I still have some Unreal games on disc sat waiting to be played just need to get round to actually playing them again.

Meh, i suppose it will be okay but for me an arena FPS needs speed and flow, both of which UT never had.
I'll be all over Reflex and maybe Project Nex.

I'm not a fan of arena shooters but I like the approach they are taking with development and letting the people decide what they want. Also the fact it is FREE :o

Imagine if DICE were like this...

Careful, you might be in danger of giving them a good idea there.

Hey if we didn't have DICE we wouldn't have the shit end of the spectrum to compare everything else to would we?

The sweet, is never as sweet, without the sour after all.

Very true, I like hating DICE anyway, let them stay where they are so more devs can do the opposite :D

I heard some stuff about people wanting to turn the game into a MOBA, porting it to console, having controller support, destructible environment and other bullshit.

The destructible environments in UT3 was fun and added a little extra, we'd play for hours on the Lego map. It was awesome but heavy on the physx side. I'd like to see it in the next iteration.

Not that surprising since there's a lot of MOBA players out there.

"I can tell you that Steam users have put an aggregate of about 3.8 billion hours into Dota 2." :o

Gone are the days of all those players playing counterstrike lol

Don't underestimate the power of hats!

Just took this screenshot, 2-3 days after the "The International 4 Compendium" was available for sale the total prize pool has increased from 1.6m USD to 3.73m USD already! :o
