ugprading my friends cpu

ok guys i need to ugprade my friends pc and i need to ugprade the mobo, vga, ramand cpu.

he currently has an old amd mobo which still uses SD RAM. an amd athlon xp 1600+ @ 1.4ghz . 512mb pc133 ram and a geforce 4 mx440 64mb.

and he definetly needs and ugprade.

i suggested he keeps his amd and overclock it with a good mobo because he has a limited ammount of money ($290).

i wish to know is it worth to keep the cpu and overclock it?? if so which is the best mobo to use??

i suggested a 9600Pro as a vga. any other ideas???

he'll be using the system to play some games on
 
Well if you can get together another 512 of RAM then I suggest a nv6200 cause the turbo cache is wkd as long as you have a gig of RAM. Its quite cheap as well.

Read a review at bit-tech.

I'm not big on motherboards, but I'd suggest trying to match his RAM with some of the same or buyinh 2 x 512 (or 2 x 256 if he can't afford 1024).

Geil do some good cheap performance RAM.

That is a very tight budget tho!!

If he is into gaming then I'd suggest the 6200 as a great performance vid card.

I'd suggest he holds on to the money and saves up more for a better set of upgrade components... With the amount he has now there's nothing he could spend it on that's going to give any significant performance increase.

If he's dead set on spending the money what I would have him do is buy a super nice 1gb dual channel PC3200 kit and use it on his current mobo in single channel until he does a major upgrade to something that supports dual channel memory. I'm sure that the ddr 133 that he's using now is holding him back a lot, that's some fuckin slow ass ram.
 
ignore turbo cache as it is a pci express fing; you could get a decent a xp in there prob is the ram bandwith will choke that system :(

the ram and proc speed will also choke ne potential graphs card the max id say that fing would take b4 upgrades will b come redundant would be a rad 9500 (a dx9 part that is beta than a 9600pro)

wat id suggest wouold b rippin out mobo and gettin a64 / 512 pc3200 then gettin a decent graphs card ....... or gettin a 2500+ ath

Yeah forgot about the Turbo cache thing is PCI-E.

But I think that the above mentioned well tops over that budget.

I would advise to do as FragTech said and get the D Chan memory (Crucial Ballistix, Geil, Corsair, OCZ etc) and then upgrade CPU/mobo/GPU at a later date.

The GPU is the thing that will improve performance in games the most, but its no good without a decent amount of RAM and a decent CPU.
 
You cant put ddr in a SDram mother board (well some earlier models had dual support up to ddr 266 - 133Mhz same as the sdram); and so to use DDR (a giant performance increase) would require a new motherboard which given would be a socket A 1 would be a waste of cash (byin obselete tech)

sai_joa mate can you write fuller, I know the terms but I keep having to think hard aboutwhat you just wrote!! ;)

Whilst I agree in principal with you about the socket A mobo, the chap has not very much money, so a Socket A motherboard will be what he's looking at. There aint any point buying SD RAM really so I reckon a bit of saving on the chaps part? ;)
 
Socket A Nforce 2 chipset and 512/1024Mb DDR3200 value RAM should hold over until some proper cash could be pooled. Certainly there is a lot of performance loss on the motherboard itself, as well as the RAM :D I recommend Nforce 2 because I found it kicked the ass of SiS and VIA socket A mobos I had (think they were Asrock K7S8XE+ and Asus A7S333)
 
ok guys he can't buy 1gb ram because the mobo doesn't supposrt ddr but only sd ram.

anywayts he'll be saving up a few more and if he can sell his current one. and i decided to sell him my mobo, ram and cpu and il give him for free my geforce 4 mx440 ( which he'll ugprade in a few time ).

il be selling him my system at the price of $480 and il be adding $100 to it. and il buy myself a new one. il be buying a socket 939 Athlon 64. 1gb ram overclockable and a good mobo.

i wish you guys could tell me what ram mobo and cpu i should buy for myself. il also be buying a decent cooler like the Hyper 6. i wish if it's possible to find a mobo with socket 939 and nforce 4 but in AGP. the reason why i want nforce 4 is so i can have sata 2 and i can use the NCQ technology which i have on my hdd.

Unfortunately theres no NF4 AGP mobos... Stick with NF3 is ur gonna rock the AGP. I'd suggest and EPoX 9NDA3+ or 9NDA3J, 6600 GT AGP, 3000+ Winnie or Venice, and some OCZ Rev. 2 EL Platinum PC3200 or OCZ EL Gold VX PC4000.

Just some suggestions :)
 
well im still gonna use my now revived 6800gt so no vga needed. :D ok i guess i have to stick with nforce 3. il look into about the ram and mobos :)
 
OCZ Platinum D Chan rocks hard. Get them.

Nforce 3 are the way to go as NF4 is PCI-E.

Could get a nice ASUS Nforce 3 SLI deluxe or a DFI board?

I think y meants NF4 Asus SLI board :) Last I checked they didn't have an NF3 PCI-E SLI board :D

I'd advise againts buying an Asus board to start with.... If ur going NF3 go with the DFI if ur looking at 754.

a nf2 mobo is a big investment esp since it is old tech hell if the new socket A mobo route is the way to go get a PC Chips M848ALU <had a 2600 + @ 2.3 GHZ in 1 of these w/ standard coolin>for £20 then get over to www.overclockers.co.uk and take advantage of them givin away bartons for £40 and 512 GEIL for £33 <offers this week only tho>
