What's not clear to me is, if an FX 8350 is capable of 1080p at 60 FPS, why does 4K at 30 FPS require a Ryzen?

It really shouldn't. CPU load goes up a little at higher resolutions, but not enough to notice in most games.

While WYP is correct, also remember the higher end GPUs are still capable of being limited by a cpu such as a FX series chip. Though you still wouldn't need a top end ryzen cpu from amd.

Well my 4770K seems to bottleneck my 1070 as well and that is even at 1080p, sooooo yeah.
