Treating myself to an SSD

Hey guys,

It looks like SSDs are coming down in price that mortals can afford them and im thinking about treating myself, Im not gonna ask which one to go for as there is enough info from you guys already about that.

I just wanna put my OS on there so im assuming a 60gb one will be fine? (running Win 7). I have been having some homework on it, its just a matter of disconnecting my current HDD, installing windows7 onto my SSD drive, (i have been told i need to change to AHCI on the SSD in BIOS) set the SSD as the 1st boot drive, then once its all installed, its just a matter if reconnecting my HDD, then eveything will be just how it was before (all my desktop shortcuts wallpaper, etc) along with much quicker boot up times? i just want to confirm with you guys as you're my most valued and respected knowledge base

Thanx in advance

Yup you've pretty much covered everything

A 60Gb is a enough for OS and a few applications, but with 120Gb at ridiculously cheap prices, i'd try and pick one of them up unless your on a budget then fair enough

Thanx Dipzy, the 120gb Kington seem to be the best for £/GB as you can get one with change out of £100, dunno if I'll sod around moving programs to it to (i know it will give me performance gains), but itll be rude not install any games and programs i get afterwards

I'd recommend the Crucial M4s...

They're just overall the most reliable, and when it comes to SSDs, I think they're all fast enough anyway to worry about a few mb/s read and write speeds

ok so i took the plunge and got myself a ssd (crucial m4) i have installed windows 7 on it and thats all good, but im just back as if i have installed windows the first time, my old hdd is still there along with all my files and folders, but my question is how to i get it back to how it was with all the shortcuts and wallpaper gadgets etc. bascaillay how do i get it all back to how it was before, the only difference is im booting off the ssd now?

thanx in advance

its easy you need to transfer all your shortcuts from your desktop folder on the old HDD to the new, same with gadgets. settings like wallpapers will need to be adjusted manually.

thanx mate that worked with the shortcuts, but the thing is when i open firefox, it just opened at "stock" firefox, none of my bookmarks were there or how i have my browser setup, when i clicked on my shortcut to crysis it wouldnt open, same when i tried to open afterburner and so on, am i required to download all these things again?

sorry for all the newbie questions again

Thanx in advance
