Transferring data

Hi guys I have data on a HDD with windows 10 TP OS on it aswell. When i get my new PC i will be putting a SSD in it and installing windows 8.1 on it is it possible to transfer the data from the HDD to the SSD through SATA even though they both have OS's on them as once i transfer the data i will be wiping the HDD and it will be my mass storage until i can afford a 1TB WD blue drive.

I would unplug the hdd while installing. When you are finished you check if everything works. Shut your system down. Reconnect the hdd to a sata port. Make sure the ssd is still the boot drive after thtat.
After you start your system the hhd (partitions) will show up in explorer. Then as you said simple copy and paste.

I was always under the impression that its not as simple as drag and drop from HDD to SSD as hard drives distribute information randomly throughout platers while ssds store data in organised blocks. You may need a transfer app I could be wrong. Worth reading up on though.

Both use a filesystem. Both are connected to the sata contoller. OP wants to transfer data not the os installation.
I have 2 SSDs and 2 HDDs in my system and I can confirm that there is no problem copying files from one to the other.

Thank you so much i just thought there might be an issue with them both having an OS installed on them but if you say its not then happy days thank you :)

If the files are in "my documents" on the HDD you may need to take ownership of it from the SSD before you can access it, so may be worth copying files c:/new folder b4 unplugging the HDD
