Tolapai - Intel's answer to intergrading.

Intel scheduled a release of new processor which combined north and south bridge in the same chip for the industry market in late 2007, code named Tolapai, according to friends in the industrial market. Tolapai is designed for embedded system and industrial computer market, against its rival VIA C7 and AMD Geode.

Using 65nm manufacturing technology, Tolapa which combined traditional processor, north and south bridge into one single chip is packed in 1088-Ball FCBGA, and its size is only 3.75cm x 3.75cm. As a Pentium M based processor, it could able to be adopted into any IA-32 operation system without any change to drivers and applications. It’s saying that Tolapa would be the best and most powerful product for Intel to advance the embedded system and industrial computer market, helping in minimizing the form factor.

Tolapai build-in DDR2 memory controller, supporting different DDR2 speeds at 400 MHz, 533MHz, 667 MHz and 800MHz. Dual Channel and ECC capability are also included in this new processor. The highest memory capacity supported is 2GB.

Features of Tolapai include: Gigabit Ethernet (RGMII或RMII), IEEE 1588 Time Synch, 1MDIO, 133x GPIO, 2組UART, 2 SMBus, 2 Controller Area Network; CAN, 1 Sync Serial Port (SSP), 1 16Bit PCI, 5 PCI-E, 2 SATA 2.0 and 2 USB 2.0.

What’s more, there is also an Acceleration Services edition for Tolapai, providing enhanced hardware security services including AES, 3DES, RC4, MD5, SHA-1, SHA-224-256-384-512, HMAC, ESA and DSA up to 1.6Gbps. And its TDM interface could make IP Telephony be possible.

Starting from 600MHz, Toapai has 3 different speeds at 600MHz, 1.06GHz and 1.2GHz, and its TDP varies from 13W to 25W. Client’s reference board is available in Q2 and final product will be shipped in late 2007.

Lots of lovely buzzwords.

Seems as tho instead of prehaps looking at things differently, they`ve tried to cram it all together, that`s progress.

In the market of today, it`ll do well.

Why they not looking towards ddr3 ? Their ddr2 is limited to 2 slots equalling 2g, would appear a step in a direction that`s not exactly forward.
