Time for an upgrade

Hey guys,

I always look at toms reviews and these forums to keep up to date with what going on, and now im thinking of starting to upgrade my shizzle. So i joined the forums and thought id ask the peeps here for advice here.

Firstly as this is the start of my upgrades ,im after a ssd, probably the Kingston HyperX 120GB 2.5" SATA-3 Solid State Drive, my board doesnt support sata 3 , but as upgrades are coming , i must be better off getting a sata 3?

Right now the important stuff ,

Board: Asus P67 Sabertooth Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard ** B3 REVISION **. I just have to have this board.

CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor, about my price range.

Now this is where i get lost what memory would be best for this board as i have no idea with all the timing s that go with it, 8GB is what im after. then theres cooling should i go for a fan or water cooling ,like the water cooling kits Tom reviewed and recommended with the 2 bay resevoir.

On the case front , the 2 i like most are,

1, Cooler Master Storm Trooper Full Tower Gaming Case - Black, maybe wait for the window version

2, Corsair Graphite 600T Midi Tower Case - Limited Edition White, its just so nice

Any probs going water with these 2 with that kit btw. Any help suggestions would be great, thanks in advance, Anth

If you're using the computer for gaming the i5 2500k will suffice, the 2600k is mainly for multi threaded applications like Sony Vegas/Photoshop etc

P67 architecture supports DDR3 ram, and there's no real need to get ram above 1866mhz. For SSD i'd avoid SandForce drives and go with a Crucial M4 which is better overall in real world performace. With the price of water cooling units such as the H70 being so cheap and effective, i'd suggest going with one of those, or the Antec equivalent.

If you want to go full water cooling setup, the Storm Trooper would be the better case, as with a midi case it would be a squeeze, and you'd probably have to get a Dremel to it for mods.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice, Yeah its mainly just for gaming , SWTOR , Skyrim and Starcraft, lol all begin with S. The odd Shooter too, and Diablo III if it ever gets released,il have a hunt around at prices, Overclockers has the Stormtrooper for £120 this week, so probs get that ordered.

2500k is plenty for gaming, you wouldn't see any advantage from going i7 over i5. You're better off putting the extra towards a GPU.

Don't buy the Storm Trooper for watercooling. You can't fit a 360 rad, you can't fit even a thick 240mm radiator. This case is great for aircooling, if you want to go watercooling there are better cases out there.

The picture is just the case with a panel window, nothing else is new.

thx for the help. i took the plunge and ordered this lot from overclockers.

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail

Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT128M4SSD2)

Asus P67 Sabertooth Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard ** B3 REVISION **

Cooler Master Storm Trooper Full Tower Gaming Case - Black

Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-15000C9 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMZ8GX3M2A1866C9)

should be fine for my needs

You say you're upgrading for gaming but what GPU do you have?

At the moment i have a Asus ENGTX480/2DI/1536MD5 Graphics Card GeForce GTX480 1536MB PCi-E DVI HDMI, not sure what kind of card to upgrade to from this, and it`l have to wait till payday next month cos i just spent 750 quid on my other parts and a some more fans

Any 1 no if the Corsair H100 Water-Cooling CPU Cooler will bolt straight up top in my StormTrooper case, and can i change the fans on it to sickle flow reds?

yeah the stormtrooper should fit the h100 fine in the top and you can change the fans

graphics cards wise save the money for the new nvidia cards when they come out or amds 7000 series
