The Wooden Box

This is my first case build so it's nothing fancy…

First off I would like to point out that apart from the component’s inside the case, everything will be made out of wood.

At this point in time it will be loaded with some scrap hardware I have laying around. The dimensions are for this hardware (somewhat) so if I stick in an E-ATX and/or GTX 295 it won’t fit.

The reason I chose wood is because it’s much more user-friendly and if you need to change a panel it’s done in a second. The wood I’m using at the moment is a 4 mm thick double layer plywood, easy to use and forgiving to the non-carpenters.

For both the HDD and the PSU I will make raised platforms so that they are close to the “roof” of the ground floor…Cable’s can’t reach >.<

The top left picture shows the two fan positioning.

The top right picture shows a prospective front view of the hardware positioning

Bottom left picture shows the top floor, with the motherboard positioning. For support I’ll use an “X” frame underneath connected to the corner supports for the flooring

Bottom right picture shows the PSU and HDD relative positions, they will probably be sent forward and the fan moved to the right pulling the air out

There will be a 10 cm “front panel” which will probably be made out of Plexiglas with a water feature theme. With a grill at the side for the fans it will either be a simple bobble machine ripped from a fish tank or “cascading water” using a small pump.

To keep electricity and water separate the Plexiglas will be sealed with wither silicon or glue from a glue-gun (whichever gives me a better finish).

For the corners I plan on making brass finished brackets. (still to plan).

Well this is an overview of the project I’ve set myself. The wood is due to be carved and assembled in this coming week and the plexi in the next one if god is on my side.

If anyone has any tips comments or suggestions of what they like/dislike and would like to see/not see please tell me  (anyone know where to hide the on off switch? ^_^)

Remember this is a beta project for me, the final one will probably include some more functional things.

Got ahead of schedule and got to the wood cutting part already. Still have to sand it down for a flat surface but the bulk has been done.

I’ve also managed to rip off my old case the motherboard mounting screws and the rubber supports.

Ignoring the fact that it’s a Micro-ATX it looks like everything fits properly for now

btw supersize me photo's eh? :D

I see Squish potential here !

Nice idea tho. I suppose the best thing about building a case with wood is that, anytime you want to modify, you don't have to dismantle the build. Drill here drill there, cable hidden, job done !

well not much to post about atm, done with the sanding.

the walls and flooring is squared out.

main things now is to find the proper supports, i was thinking that so it won't show on the outside, the metal brackets could be fixed on wooden supports which will be glued to the sides

OR

build a raised platform so that the sides are untouched

on a side note, should i do any work on the cables or it should be fine to just put them in as they are? whaaaaaaaaaaa

i'll be going off to the hardware store (Weired Al anyone? :D ) and see what type of metal gadgets and brackets they are selling...

i know that i'll be building them from scratch!!! ohhhhhh the pain!! what should i build them out from anyhow? :D was thinking brass or copper (for the colour)

well not much of a project logger sorry... anyhow

some pics of the build...it goes SOOO fast that it's amazing!

plan it out, draw a couple of lines and teh wood is cut in seconds no stupid metal problems!

well now i'm on the point on desiding some minor things will post more when i'm not so busy
