The waiting game... 290X over 490X?

As it currently stands, the 290X Platinum Edition goes for rather cheap here in Sweden. And I was wondering if it's worth the wait or go and buy 2 of these babies by the end of the month?

I do plan on playing at 4K later this year. Specs are in the sig.

I'd rather get a Lightning over a Matrix tbh.

It really depends on you and if you want it now. If you do then go for it and you won't be dissapointed. Or just wait and see how the 390x is. This question doesn't really have a specific answer. It's pretty much your opinion on what you think is right

Jag skulle personligen vänta tills 390X kommer ut ;) ... Det är vad jag gör för tillfället med min 980, ska försöka och lämna tillbaka den för att senare se vad marknaden har att erbjuda.

I'd personally wait till the 390X comes out ;) ... That's what I'm doing at the moment with my 980, will try and return it to later see what the market has to offer.

(Hope mods don't mind some Swedish here... did put the English in there as well)

I was in a similar conundrum but have now just ordered two gtx 970s ( msi) to replace my 280x crossfire set-up. I was damn tempted by the 290x and TBH if you play alot of battlefield its prob a better option

its really not the right time to buy any card now - amd or nvidia - for the simple reason that the fabled 390x with its fancy new memory will shake up prices drastically across the spectrum once its released. Every card will suddenly become a bit cheaper instantly.
You can quote me on this and if im wrong, I'll eat a part of my boot. thats how sure i am of this.

This is what I'm currently doing, returned my 980 to wait and see for the market once everything comes around, 390X and 980Ti etc.

Upgrading from an 6950 :p

The waiting game is indeed on as we speak. All we need now is for Tom to do some benchmarks once the card is out :D

If the card ends up at around ~600€ for the 4GB version then its an instant buy in my opinion as 980 Ti is being sold for around 750€ here in Sweden.

You can still get 2x 290X 4GB for 600€ mind you!

Aye, best idea is to wait but don't hold your breath. Everything so far is saying that AMD are going to flop pretty fierce and struggle to match Nvidia this iteration. But here's my take (as I've looked into buying another 290 for a while).

  • If you want value, buy the 290x's now but be aware of temps, noise, and power consumption.
  • If you want performance and 4k gaming right now, buy Nvidia.
  • If you want 4k gaming at a good frame rate, see if you can wait next year for pascal to drop and buy that. That's my plan as those cards should be incredible.

If you want performance and 4k gaming right now, buy Nvidia.

More like, if you've got more than £800 buy Nvidia for 4k gaming. Two 970s aren't going to cut it vram wise in the mid-long term at 4k. you can buy two 8gb 290x and get better fps for the price of a 980TI.

Going on rumors isn't smart.

As I say, AMD are better value for money but not performance. 2 290x's will do ok at 4k, but will struggle, but what do you expect at that price from gpus that old. Plus the heat and noise is a pain to deal with. Compare them to 2 980s or 980ti's and AMD are left in the dust especially with the OC potential Maxwell has, but as with everything you are paying a lot for those gains.
But nothing at the moment hits 60fps at 4k so frankly if anyone wants 4k, wait until the 14nm shrink happens next year and then empty your wallet at that.

i dissagree, 1080p wise two 970's are going to do me just fine for a while....4k no........that should go without saying.other than that i agree

2x290x's would do better and cost less. Currently I don't see why anyone would buy from Nvidia outside the TX.. as you get more with AMD.Besides they sure do seem shady as of late.

Everyone is currently hoping on the Nvidia bandwagon and claiming oh the rumors say the Fiji/Fury can't compete with anything Nvidia has right now.. Makes me laugh based off the fact they make an argument off rumors and because It shows how scared Nvidia fanboys are. It'll compete with a 980ti. I wouldn't doubt if it competed with a TX either. That's not based off rumors, that's just logical thinking.
