The Life of a USB Flash Drive

I just found out today that USB flash drives live for approximately thirty thousand cycles. In case you are wondering, a “cycle” constitutes as a read or write. There is an ongoing debate as to whether or not the lifespan of a flash drive is diminished by leaving it connected to a computer for extended periods of time. If you’re like me and you keep important files on a flash drive then a weekly CD-R backup is a must (not CD-RW’s or floppies because they continually lose their integrity with each re-write).

in case you're wondering, two people with flash drives that i know of (out of the three i know of total) had their flash drives die on them in the last year.

Damn I thought this was going to be a short story from the frame of your flash drive.

Sorry, was watching Fight Club a few minutes ago. I was going to just post...

It's funny I've never had a flash drive... Everyone around me has one and uses it pretty frequently but I find that my 4gb SD card works very well and has a lot higher capacity than a standard flash drive.

The only downside of course is that w/o the camera and a usb cable I can't access the data anywhere that doesn't have a card reader.
