The BIG Question

Is it really worth it to upgrade to the 4770k or go with the 3770k which has made its reputation.

Upgrade? Implying you already own a 3770k? Don't bother upgrading. And if you're talking building a new system, then it depends on what you need. Ivy bridge overclocks better, but Haswell will have more sata 6gb/s and such.

I am still running my Phenom x6 1090t. I am looking to upgrade from it to intel. The most I will be running sata-wise is 2 ssd's and 2 hdd's.

3770k with a z77 board. Overclock it. And I'm sure you can get some gear at reduced prices since it's technically outdated.

Hey thanks for you input. No offense, but would like to hear others as well. I have been looking at 3770k for awhile. I just havent pulled the trigger and got it yet. I was kinda waiting to see what haswell could offer. Anyway, thanks again!

If you're buying now - I'd be buying the latest tech.

Compare the price differences. I worked it out for my friend the other day and getting Haswell over Ivy only came to about £30 more expensive (depending on the board).

Nothing at all wrong with Ivy, but it'll lose its appeal more when you come to resell it a year or so (or whenever) down the line, and it wouldn't even be last generation.

4770k is £260 ATM on aria and the 3770k is £245 (£274 and £248 normal price)

so for £15 more you could get the 4770k, boards are around the same price on either socket.

4770k will beat the 3770k at 200 MHz lower clocks (4.6 4770 will beat 4.8 3770).

only thing to worry about is temps (can look at Tom's video).

This.

Besides, if you want to upgrade your CPU again (would probably not be necessary, but upgrading is fun) a year or two down the line, you wouldn't have to buy a new motherboard.

appreciate all the input. as much socket change as intel does i would almost have to buy a new mobo if i upgraded cpu.

update/
WWTD? What would Tom do?

Asus high end? Not so much anymore dude... At least that's my opinion.
Get a new AMD cpu/motherboard if budget is limited; Steamroller Cpus(next new ones) will be using the same socket so a new motherboard won't be needed. Otherwise go for intel 4770k and a good priced motherboard. Motherboard doesn't have to be super high end because Haswell will hit a certain point in volts where temps skyrocket.

ok so y would buying the 4770k that gets hot be better than the 3770k that overclocks well and gets decent temps

I guess instead of telling me what to buy. tell me why i should get one or the other

Haswell is faster even with on average of 200mhz lower clocks. Gets hotter and overclocks less. It's resale value will be higher.
Ivy gets less hot and overclocks better. But on average a 3770k can hit 4.5-6ish ghz before temps skyrocket. Meanwhile haswell can hit about 4.3-4ghz ish and therefore ever so slightly faster.

An Amd Cpu(Piledriver FX) can hit about 4.8ghz-5ghz on average for aircooling with acceptable volts. If current trends continues AMD cpus will perform better in gaming and heavily multi-threaded programs. Yet still be cheaper.

That's a summary for you.

ok well put. i have also had the thought of staying amd as well. I would prob just upgrade the mobo and ram and keep my processor. who knows. this is almost like picking out a tooth brush. ridiculously difficult

Not that hard. Sticking with AMD will save you money. Upgrading now and when the new FX series comes out then grab the highest end one and save money compared to the intel route.
