Temp control fan silencing advice needed

I have an 'arctic cooling pro tc' case fan.

I don't use it because when it's fitted the temp control makes it slow right down - all very nice and silent, great - but the psu fan then speeds up to compensate and makes more racket than the original case fan.

Can I either;

A; get the psu fan to run at a constant speed and not speed up - can I set this in the bios or something?

or B: short the temperature control device on the arctic cooler fan? Even at full speed it's fairly quiet, so if I can bypass the temp control it should do the job.

Any advice is appreciated as the fans I bought have just sat in their boxes for a few years.

Depending on your motherboard and the software provided you can have the mobo tell the fan to run at full speed all the time. DFI boards come with a program called smart guardian which allows you to control your fan speeds manually.

What kind of boad do u have?

I don't think I can do anything about the temp control fan speed as it has a temp sensor attached which alters the speed - I think it's simply a variable resistor which is temperature sensitive.

If I can get the psu fan to behave itself though, then we're in business.

(The system's getting on a bit now and I'll have to get you guys to pimp it for me - might as well have some fun while I spec a new one.)

see if a program called speedfan works for you....it requires a specific temp chip which you probs wont have but its worth a try

If the fan controls its own speed, the motherboard probably cant speed it up, but if the motherboard controls the speed, then yes you can. If the fan is self controlling, it is probably controlled by a thermistor, which will be sticking out slightly from the hub of the fan, so that it can get the temperature from the air going through the fan. If you short out the wires of the thermistor, it will make the fan run at full speed.

Excellent! That's what I was thinking but I wasn't sure it would work - it's got a thermistor and I was thinking of shorting it.

At full speed the fan is still only doing 2500 rpm.

Thanks.

The max speed for the fan is 2800rpm iirc, so 2500 isn't far off and isn't bad.

Edit : - I've just found out that the max speed is 2400rpm, so you're getting an extra 100rpm for free :p.

Well, it says 2500 on the box - I haven't measured it.

Have you tried these fans?

I rather like the look of arctic cooling stuff - when I was first looking for quieter fans they were cheaper than similarly specced stuff but they look good quality.

I have tried them in the past, I had one on an Artic Cooling HSF, but I'm currently using Akasa Ultra Quiets, as they're very quiet ;).

How many dBA do they push out and what kind of price are they?
