Take half my network speed !

What or why is it if I have wmp running on this pc, I can file transfer @ 10.4mbs - turn off wmp, it increases steadily to 20+ ? (average obviously)

I`m not installing another player.

(Vista 64bit ultimate SP1 regular install)

Could be that WMP is enabling Quality Of Service (QoS) to help media stream better from your network/internet. It may also be throtlling your Hard Drive transfer speed to again help your media play smoother.

You can disable QoS in XP but im not sure how to in Vista, try looking in your network card config and looking for QoS like this:
