Study: Windows 7 doesn't boot faster

Although Windows 7 has been praised for loading and shutting down faster than prior versions of Windows, one software company says that, in many cases, the new operating system can take longer to get started than Windows Vista.

'Course they're mainly talking about the bloated oem-esq builds and all that come with them.

I counted the seconds for my gaming pc the other day cos another thread was talking about boot up times. It took about 90s from selecting Restart on the Vista desktop until I could launch a game. This includes the AHCI bios check thing at the beginning.

With these little studies (and ofc u have to do ur own research here cos if u look into it, the people saying it's slower actually sell products that can speed up boot times ;)) it brings me back to a thread a while ago about games being slower than Vista.

Progress ?

Mine is a standard install on now average hardware and Win7 takes 20 seconds to load (the bios takes 20 seconds too though)

Mine is very fast at loading up thankfully. On a slightly different note, it took about 20 minutes to install windows 7 ultimate 64 bit yesterday, i was very impressed with that.

I imagine this will improve over time as MS update the OS. Vista was a bit flaky when it first came out, and boot times is something that's pretty hot atm, I'd be surprised if it wasn't addressed.

Just waiting for my delivery of Win 7 to turn up on 22 hopefully :),

I have a few new pieces MB, CPU RAM waiting for it to turn up. I will be gutted if there is a delay.

Who is using Ultimate?

Everyone must be using the RC or am i missing something?

I thought the launch was 22 oct?

Mind you i do have the ultimate 64 signature version sat next to me ready for my "house party" .... oh did i forget to invite you guys? sorry :p

Most people will be using the RTM version.

I'm running the free version of win 7 x64. I originally had 4GB of ram but pumped in an extra 4 GB yesterday and the start up/ shut down times are exactly the same, am I missing something ?

ram shouldnt have anything to do with it. its how fast the processor can process the startup threads and how fast it can access the files from the HDD

I'd disagree.

The size of the ram bears little consequence, but plays 'a' part, but the ram speed dictates how fast the cpu can play.

this is true, but the difference is negligable. to really see a difference you would need a much larger amount of ram. 4gb is fast enough to load up the pc, and ram isnt directly linked to the processor, but does have an effect. Overall these differences are tiny, although going from 512mb ram to 8gb ram would probably yield a noticeable difference XD

Yeah the difference will be more/less noticeable depending on the speed memory u compare.

Take the hp's in here running 4200u ddr2, sticking 5300 won't make too much difference, but above that u'll notice alot more.

Go way back to ddr and u'll definately notice 266/333/400 mhz with ur... Optiplex boot times.
