Striker Strikes Again

Hey all,

Got given a little project from my dad. He has bought a fairly kiss ass setup from Scan nearly 2yrs ago but never got around to building it as he thought he had blown the motherboard or something.

So I met up with him the other day over a pint and asked about his system and he told me that its still sitting in boxes.. In shock I loaded my car up with his stuff and have told him I will get it all working for him.

Now after shooting myself in the foot with this I have come to realise what a pain in the a** this is going to be.

He has a ASUS Striker Extreme with a Q6600 Quad, 2x 2GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 and 2x XFX 8800GTS's

The only problem now is its getting the notorious "CPU INIT" in the lcd poster screen. I have tried all sorts of methods but still getting no where.

Any you lovely people know of this and got a work around? I spent 2 days googling around and the best I have found was to either ditch the board or RMA it and hope for the best when it comes back.

Cheers

My board constantly displayed that as well for some reason. I just took out the CMOS battery with the power out. Removed ALL RAM sticks and tried to boot up with a fresh BIOS but no RAM. It then comes up with DRAM INIT which is a step further than the CPU INIT if I remember correctly. Put one stick of RAM back in and see if you can then boot up. If you can, put the other back in. That seemed to sort it out for me.

Best of luck :)

Ooh, and by the way. CPUINIT will some times remain on the LCD even when the board is off but still has power. I don't know why but that's the way it was with mine.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.. I will try your method now as I have all the kit set up in my kitchen (man's workshop) much to the wife's disagreement :)

Will post up my results in a while

as TMDD said, take out ram and try booting like that. I had the same problem and that worked for me. If not, take out the battery and leave it for a while.

Ok..

Unplugged all power leads, no gfx cards plugged in, no ram plugged in, took out the battery, placed the blue switch thing on pins 2/3 to clr the cmos.

Left it for 20mins

put switch to pins 1/2, put battery back in, still no ram or gfx cards plugged in, put power cables back in and tried too boot up.

Still have "CPU INIT" on the lcd and doesnt change.

BTW the mobo is out the of case and resting on top of my PERL bible :)

All lights work, all fans work

Possibly a dead board.. Have you got another cpu, or maybe try it without a cpu in.. you will still get the cpu init without a cpu, but it may help to reset the board?

Whats up with these damn boards... seems so many people are getting this message? What a waste of money. (Glad it wasnt mine)

So firing up a mobo without a cpu wont make it go up in smoke will it?

No dont have another cpu, nor any spare ram. Only what was given to me.

Id see if the motherboard is still able to be RMA'd

If it was scan you normaly get 24months RTB waranty

If its passed that try your luck with asus

But TBH Id not bother and buy a new sli mobo, as strikers are renowned for being a pita

What a nightmare! He hasn't even used the damn thing and it's looking like its going in the bin. I've had 3 ASUS boards and they have been top notch must just be that specific board thats a bag of...!

CPUINIT is normal. It stands for CPU Initialisation which basically means the board is "turning on" the CPU.

CPUINIT can be displayed for the entirety of the bios setup. My Maximus does it all the time. I thought it was an issue when my machine decided to stop working. But I reset the CMOS and left it for a few hours and she then booted.

Obviously, it could also mean the board has gotten stuck while initialising the CPU.

I have taken the cpu out, cleaned it, re-pasted it and put the sink back on. Still nothing.

Also I have left the battery out over night. Still nothing.

The "CPU INIT" message stays on, nothing else appears which I know for a fact it did once it starts testing the ram etc etc.

Also I am getting nothing on the screen.

i have a striker the original version of the board doesnt fully support quad core's and you have to update the bios, if its a revision a1 then it should work with a q6600.

If you contact asus they will more than likley to do what other's have already suggested, just tell em that you have tried pretty much everything and that the board has raised questions about buying from asus again, that usaully get them to do something as they still want your $$$$.

Also check none of the cpu pins are bent, if that's not the problem then i think it might be down to the ram Asus boards are legendary to not like ram with high voltages or particular brands.

Also what psu do you have, if you accidently put a pci express 8pin into the 8pin mobo connector it wont post
