Staying anonymous and defeating internet censorship

Hello,

I feel it would be a suitable entrance to a forum to spread some knowledge. As one of the most prominent threats to your privacy online and your online rights is censorship and identification.

Am I Being Censored?

The chances are that the answer to this question is a definitive yes, places such as Belarus, China and North Korea censor the sites of other political parties and anyone who is not in strong support of their leaders.

The Belarus elections took places yesterday, and the site of the opposition party was hijacked and redirected. They also restricted all SSL connections and prohibited accessing Facebook, and other places were the opposition have a presence.

Places like the United Kingdom are also censored, but this censorship is understandable, as it blocks child-pornography (I certainly agree with this censorship)

If you wish to look more specifically at the state of internet censorship in your country, go here

How can I hide myself?

Onion routing is a method of masking your identity on the internet. You connect to nodes and your request is routed through these, having one layer of decryption taken off each time. It works in such a way that it is impossible to tell where the traffic is going to go, and that even if you could you would still have to decrypt each layer, making the possibility of having your identity stolen next to nothing.

Tor is the most popular onion routing program, with over 2000 dedicated nodes. It is used by rights workers, world military, and governments worldwide, as well as people in countries with restricted internet access.

Tor comes with a portable version of Mozilla Firefox, which includes the Tor plugin and will mask your identity.

Im at a loss as to why you would want to hide yourself from your online activities if your not doing anything illegal.

First of all, there should be no country where freedom of speech shouldn't exist, in certain countries(as said in the first post) people can't express their support in a political party.

I don't walk around the street with my Name and address on my back, I don't see why I should have to on the internet.

I understand your point of view, this is just what I believe.

true you dont broadcast your name and address when walking down the street.

but are you really in a position whereby you need that level of privacy that you need to mask all your online activities?

I couldnt give a poop who reads what ever i see or do online.

If i was restricted from accessing information then i suppose thats the issue your highlighting?

Yes, precisely.

The UK government are going to, by default, block all pornography. While this doesn't effect me, once this is done there is no stopping them from blocking, say, the labour party web-site.

well i really dont think that would happen! Come on thats not a very good example

I lost my Freedom of Speech as soon as I started my job, and it does not bother me one bit as I can still have my views and share them with people I know, I just cannot activley impose them on others and tbh I wouldn't want to.

as for the blocking, I believe you will be able to ask for it to be unblocked.
