Starting the upgrade process

Long story short is that, over the next 18 months or so I plan to do a major overhaul of my current computer with a switch over to an mATX build and I'm going to have to buy everything over time due to the overall cost and a job change on the horizon as well.
I am mostly set on what the specs will be with only a few uncertainties which are related to the time frame as some stuff might be following this generation.

Uses: Gaming (BF3/4,batman Arkham Origins sort of stuff) , standard web browsing and office work and some light media work.

Proposed Specs:

Corsair 350D
Gigabyte G1 Sniper M5 or Asus Maximum VI Gene (not sure which of the two) paired with an i5 4670k and a H100i
Corsair AX 760 (is it worth getting the 760i instead for £15?)
GTX 770 or AMD equivalent at time of purchase
Samsung 840 pro 256GB
Current 1TB HDD, optical drive and RAM can be carried over at this time.

My two problems lie with the motherboard choice and what order to start buying everything in as it will have to go in my current setup as well. I'm thinking that the PSU should be the first on the list as I am a bit wary about my current unrated one and after my brother's similarly aged version of this went bang a few months ago I fear mine will follow at the worst possible time. I am happy to sit with the 5770 I have for a bit longer and don't mind turning stuff down just now as I know that I won't be gaming heavily for the next while but I will go back eventually.


TL;DR What is better, Asus Maximum VI Gene or G1 Sniper M5
Where do I start my upgrading first? SSD or PSU

Kind of silly to plan an upgrade that will last 18months. Better off saving all that cash and then buying it all at once. Will also get you better tech and performance in the future.

I know which is part of the problem- no point running Haswell with a 5770 but by the same token my PSU won't handle throwing in the new GPU. Just the system is starting to annoy me now and wanting to do something.

Damn all this new tech being about setting the upgrade bug into action. Thinking i'm best going with the PSU and SSD at first then getting case, gpu, mb and cpu together

My advice would be upgrade to a 650watt PSU if you don't plan on SLI/Xfire and then get a 250gb+ SSD. Save up and then get everything all at once. If you think all the new tech is getting you the itch to upgrade; waiting over a period of 18months and getting parts will make you unsatisfied with what you could have gotten if you just got it all at once when the budget permits.

Late reply, been busy the last few days and had a think about this.

Going to go with the PSU and SSD upgrades as soon as I can, easy enough for me to throw them into my current setup and won't take too much of a hit when I have saved up for the rest.

It makes far too much sense to do as you said and get all the main performance parts at once, time to really get saving then.

Last point - AX760 or AX760i ? Going to get one of them as I do want to get a top rated fully modular PSU and the 7 year warranty is very enticing and I also plan on getting the braided cables. Would you say it is worth spending the extra to get the "i" version?
